DrHolliday Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) I hope this is posted in the right place - if not, sorry! I just started playing the Technipack, but I have some lag issues in single-player (I have not tried multiplayer yet). I find it weird, as my PC has 8 gigs RAM, a 3570K and a GTX770. I have the latest 64-bit Java (and no previous versions installed), and I have allocated 7 gigs of RAM to the game, but to no avail. I am running everything on max settings, but surely I should be able to do so? The lag is not persistent, but comes in spikes. Any suggestions? EDIT: Maybe I should add that I am only running chrome in the background. Edited August 22, 2014 by DrHolliday
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted August 22, 2014 Discord Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 I have allocated 7 gigs of RAM to the game, but to no avail. There's your problem. Don't allocate more than 3G to the launcher unless you are trying to run a 256x texture pack and even then only bump it to 4. Giving too much memory can cause the garbage collection threads to spank your CPU and can starve your OS of memory.
DrHolliday Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Thanks for your reply, I'll try it out I'm not sure it's going to work, though, as I up til recently had 3 gigs allocated, but I still lagged. Do you agree on my assumption that my PC should be able to handle it, or is the modpack more taxing than i first assumed?
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted August 22, 2014 Discord Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 That system should yield about perfect performance. DrHolliday 1
disconsented Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) Drop down to 1GB and keep bumping it up slowly until you find the balancing point There is also the possibility that your storage is at fault Edited August 22, 2014 by disconsented
DrHolliday Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 @disconsented - Can you explain what you mean by storage? Like the folder where my game is located? How do I fix/repair if that is the issue?
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted August 22, 2014 Discord Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 He means that if your hard drive is very full, or it's slow, the game performance can suffer.
DrHolliday Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Hmmm okay, my hard drive is pretty fast, so that's not the issue either. I did a clean install of the modpack, and allocated 3 gigs of ram again. Still lag.
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted August 22, 2014 Discord Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 What do you mean by "lag": Does it run well and then pause for a noticeable period? Do you have block break/place lag? Is your FPS bad? Do you have chunk loading lag? Are some chunks not loading? The reason I ask these questions is that if you are truly able to allocate 3G in the launcher, you have the current Java 7 JRE and your stated specs it should run wonderfully. Something is "odd".
DrHolliday Posted August 23, 2014 Author Posted August 23, 2014 It runs smooth for a while (30-60 mins), then it starts lagging. I never drop below 40 fps. No block break/place lag All chunks seem to load. In the distance, I can sometimes see chunks that are not loaded, but they eventually will when I get closer. I have from 100-400 chunks loading, is this as it should be? In the top right corner it says that I use around 1000 MB memory out of 2731 MB, but just below it states: "Allocated memory: 42% (1163MB)". The top line I can understand, but I do not understand the second one. Considering I'm not using all the memory I have allocated, it's doesn't seem to be memory related, does it? Thanks for helping out btw!
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted August 23, 2014 Discord Moderator Posted August 23, 2014 What is your CPU load looking like when this lag happens? It is starting to look like there is something else going on in the background that is sucking down resources.
