Ok so new users (like myself) have had a lot of trouble with running Technic Launcher and are met with nothing but sarcastic remarks by others who have been here a while and think we're all just idiots (not all the time thank you :P). So here's where I'm at.

Platform: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Java: JRE 7u4 64 bit (For Windows)

Antivirus: McAfee Antivirus Plus (Completely uninstalled and tried all the solutions I'll list below and caused no change)

Problem: Ran the .exe and get a quick flash of Checking Launcher Version. Ran the .jar that's put in the appdata folder by the Technic Launcher.exe using Java SE Binary Platform (The java one not javaw or javaws) and get a barely moment flash of a command prompt (the black window) that after many retries I manage to make out something like "Error: Could not find or load 'insert file location to technic-launcher.jar' ". Went back to the site and downloaded the jar download and tried again with same result as when I ran the jar from the .exe (no surprise). Then trying what a moderator said to find the exact error message I went to start, typed in cmd (in the search), launcher it, typed in "cd %appdata%\.techniclauncher" (press enter) "java -jar technic-launcher.jar" and get it to launch just fine with this message in the prompt

May 05, 2012 9:02:53 PM org.spoutcraft.launcher.Util log

WARNING: Rebooting with [java, -Xmx1024m, -jar, "C:/Users/Myself/AppData/

Roaming/.techniclauncher/technic-launcher.jar"]

That's the exact message after I entered in the commands and it launches the Technic Launcher just fine though it's annoying to do over and over. While I understand this is a solution I'd like for the launcher to be fixed so I can just run the .exe

Thank you for all the hard work that has gone into Technic and it's associated Mods and Modpacks. I love it and would just like this little issue cleared up quickly if possible.

This worked for me as well, which is great cause everything else people proposed didn't work. I also felt it would be lame to have to type that over and over, luckily I had the idea that maybe you could create a notepad file type to auto input the commands. Turns out all you have to do is take the two commands and put them into notepad (making sure each command has its own line) and make the file type ".cmd" without the quotes. Now all you have to do is run that file and it will bring up the launcher.

P.S. The first time I ran it it didn't do anything, but the second time I ran it it worked.

Yes, but running it with what? An unzipping application? Should it just go directly into the .minecraft folder? Then how would you choose between differing mod collections? And how would Tekkit come into play compared to Technic?

I'm completely unclear as to what everyone means by "Running" the jar file.

As Jay said. Right click and open with -> java. .Jars can act like cross platform exes as well as archives. It's usually standard that if a jar can be run with java it will, but sometimes its not on by default for some people. The exe itself just runs a .jar which it puts in the .techniclauncher folder and unpacks it for you. The advantage of the exe is that it can auto update in some places that the jar can't. I'm not sure why you're talking about the .minecraft folder. It leads me to think you're confused about a lot of things since technic in no way touches or interacts with your regular minecraft install. I'd say read into things a little more. There's plenty of information on these boards that would help you, including what I've just told you.

To the OP, you're making way more work for yourself then you needed. A quick read of the common problems thread would have saved you a lot of trouble and told you that you can just download and run the .jar version as you would the exe. Just put it on your desktop and run it like a executable. Wammo, technic!

Yea I learned afterwards the separation of Technic and .minecraft when I went to get a texture pack and realized it was in the wrong texture folder.

Edit: I uninstalled all versions of java, and installed java 7 only, didn't know if this was relevant but figured I would state it none-the-less.

Whenever I run it with java, it pops up a window stating "Unable to launch the application". under the exception tab it has:

MissingFieldException[ The following required field is missing from the launch file: <jnlp>]

at com.sun.javaws.jnl.XMLFormat.parse(Unknown Source)

at com.sun.javaws.jnl.LaunchDescFactory.buildDescriptor(Unknown Source)

at com.sun.javaws.jnl.LaunchDescFactory.buildDescriptor(Unknown Source)

at com.sun.javaws.jnl.LaunchDescFactory.buildDescriptor(Unknown Source)

at com.sun.javaws.Main.continueInSecureThread(Unknown Source)

at com.sun.javaws.Main$1.run(Unknown Source)

at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)

Also sometimes running the jar also creates a folder on my desktop with the fields Customer->Appdata->Roaming->.techniclauncher->rtemp->"empty". I was able to replicate this yesterday but I forgot what exactly causes this.

I know I probably screwed something up somewhere, as I'm really good at doing that accidentally.... However, the little work-around the OP found has been working fine for now, so I'm not to worried about it considering I just double click a file and the launcher starts.

P.S. To the OP, sorry for hi-jacking your topic.
