How to clear a single block on server

Hello all,

I'm having an issue with a block on my server. I'm looking into various ways to remove this block but I'm having difficulty finding a good solution.

I need a block at specific coordinates removed with commands from console (not in-game) while the server is running. I have tried the plugin listed below which would serve my needs perfectly but the plugin is not working. Does anyone know of a working plugin similar to the one below?

http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/set-block/

Thanks,

If it is just a block that is crashing the client/server when you get close you will probably need something like MCEdit to get rid of it. If it's just causing a crash when interacted with you should be able to break it in creative mode.

Deleting a region file resulting in the removal of potentially over 100 million blocks when you only need to delete one block is probably not the way to go. The old colloquial axiom "throwing the baby out with the bath water" comes to mind.

it works, it's fast and simple and it useful to know this information.

why are you such a troll?

A troll? Yeah, that sounds about right. Is it easy to just delete a region file which could (and on any decent sized server almost certainly will) contain any number of other user's builds? Yes, in SSP, if you haven't built anything in that region file go right ahead and delete it. If you have to tell half a dozen users that the bases they've been building up for the past six months have been wiped out because you couldn't be bothered to use a simple tool to fix the offending block/chunk you are: 1) A bad administrator. 2) Going to lose a lot of players. Rolling specific region files back to one of your hourly snapshots (you are keeping hourly/daily/weekly snapshots, yes?) is a much more viable solution in the event of something more than the corruption of a few blocks or entities.

Sharing factual, accurate and relevant information to resolve people's problems does not make one a troll. Sharing anecdotal success stories to folks who may not understand the impact of those actions can be harmful to a community.

You have 16 posts, poor grammar, and offer "suggestions" that are potentially destructive and not particularly helpful.

I don't see where you are coming from calling someone a troll when that person has 200 times your post count (while post count doesn't mean as much around here, the number is informative) and has never to my knowledge been anything but helpful.

@Badcholo: I never attacked or insulted you. When someone comes into the forums and seemingly attempts to countermand suggestions and advice (specifically regarding memory allocation, client/server co-mingling, scalability, etc.) which has been tried and tested by a large community of users it is our duty to make sure that the original poster of the thread is made aware of the community consensus. I am not here to tell anyone what to do (hence my frequent use of the pronoun "one" instead of "you"). I'm here to make observations and relay information. How that information is received is up to the reader. I am more than willing to have a conversation concerning specific points related to maintenance, setup, troubleshooting, configuration, etc. provided that conversation includes specific, relevant, and non-anecdotal contributions. (the number of hyphens in this paragraph is too high :) )

1 Why do you guys attack everyone that posts anything? Why don't you expand on what i said and inform players of what those actions do.

2 Instead of insulting players and trying to pick a fight. I'm new to the forums and maybe i just need to be careful with what i post.

3 I want to help players and share my knowledge.

4 Anything you do to a server such as changing a config file could be considered a destructive suggestion.

5 Even using MCEdit.

6 I didn't see you say anything about back up your server before you.........

7 Your post count doesn't mean anything to me with such poor attitude.

8 Thanks for attacking my grammar, buddy, your doing such a great job!

9 7k posts of attacking gramma!!! i got 2 words for ya, let it go!!

Added line numbers for reference, because I didn't want 9 separate quotes.

1 Exaggeration of my posting history.  I wasn't even attacking you, let alone everyone.  I was pointing out why calling PMP a troll is probably unreasonable.

2 It would have been insulting to say you are a terrible poster.  Saying you have poor grammar is simply factual.  Do some proofreading before hitting the Post button.  Then go back and use the Edit button if you later realize you made a mistake.  It's how people learn and grow.  I could just as easily say you were insulting a player when you called someone else here a troll.

3 Feel free to offer advice from your great store of knowledge, but keep in mind that part of being knowledgeable is having the correct knowledge.  PMP is right in this case: deleting a region file to catch a single corrupted block or even chunk is overkill, and will piss off your players if anyone had a base in the area.  Then you would have to go back and correct things after your correction.

4 That very statement is the reason backing up your server is considered so basic to server management that

6 it shouldn't need to be mentioned.  It's a given.

Back to 5 MCEdit is used when the server isn't running.  Meaning you've backed the entire world up before you even open the program.

7 My attitude has not been questioned here, at least not very often.  I'm questioning yours, because you're hyper-sensitive and defensive when someone offers some sound advice that goes even mildly against one of your "suggestions."  This is the second thread you've called PMP a troll in, when he wasn't acting like one, so this is me calling you on it.

8 Your sarcasm is noted, unless you weren't being sarcastic, which if true means you have other issues.

9 I don't actually post about others' grammar often, but I do use it as a guide on how mature or intelligent they seem to be.  I have some news for you: people do that in real life as well.

1 Okay

2 No it isn't.  Understood.  No, more like a guideline.

3 Yes you do. :)

4 Backing up everything you have that's electronic is basic knowledge.  It's kind of like keeping backup or secure copies of legal documents.  It's a basic life lesson that most people learn the hard way.

5-11, 243345 We get it.  You're allowed to be upset.  Poor grammar is a sign that you either can't be bothered to become more fluent in the language you're speaking or writing in, or you are incapable of it.  The latter is...rare, and more people need to take the time and effort to use better grammar.  Otherwise life will beat the lesson into them that the level of grammar you use reflects directly and highly on how other people see you.

No, you're not banned, because you are currently following the First Rule of Holes (one of my personal favorites).  Ask a few other members of the forums how they got off to a rocky start, and ended up participating much better over time.  No, I won't delete all your posts.  As a matter of fact, I suggest you keep making them, but do two things while posting here: 1) Think before, during, and after posting.  2) Proof your posts.  Act as if you were writing an essay or taking a test.  Do that here, and do it everywhere, and you will quickly discover that people respond to you differently.  Some responses may not be positive, but on average they will be.
