1. bro. You'll need to post your own thread with your log files attached and link it to me in this one if you want my help troubleshooting. :D
2. That's not easily possible and involves fiddling with an old router we keep around as a backup. However, I woke up in a bad mood and started hitting the "Stop" button on certain services on my gateway, which runs ClearOS, http://www.clearfoundation.com/Software/overview.html . I tried disabling intrusion detection - didn't fix it. However, when I disabled the content filter (which shouldn't be up anyway, as it was randomly classifying sites like Arstechnica as porn, granted Arstechnica is geek porn but that should be something a Linux router encourages), it started working. So anyone behind a content filter who is having an issue like this should try disabling the content filter.
3. Yep, am running as an admin, have tried running it with that batch file that tells Java to use IPv4 (I think that's what it does), same result. I'm wondering if I need to white list Tekkit's servers in my gateway or something. Tomorrow I might spoof my external facing mac address to force my ISP to give me a new IP, to make sure it isn't some odd IP-greylist thing could be Tekkit's fault. Thanks for trying to help! :)
4. CPU usage is between 3 and 12% while waiting. My available download bandwidth is around 2 megabytes/second and manually downloading any of the files it lists takes such a miniscule amount of time it's ridiculous. These are my speedtest results, One thing that is the same for both me and my brother that might be applicable is that we have both upgraded to Samsung 830 series solid state disks in the past few weeks. This should make it lightning fast to load though. He also tested it on a laptop, which is not on an SSD, and it did this as well. This makes me think it's a network issue. Antivirus is Comodo Internet Security and is disabled entirely including all firewalls+sandboxing. Is there any way to launch Tekkit directly from a jar?
5. So, it's progressed a bit. I logged in, had to update, updated, it took forever and then some to download and extract the mods. When I went to join my server it told me I was missing requisite mods, so I've done the entire thing again. This time I googled "Technic launcher slow", as it appears to be the launcher in general now rather than network issues. I ran in to these threads: http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/very-long-loading-from-start-and-launcher-is-buggy.13520/ http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/technic-launcher-extremely-slow.2580/ No solutions yet but to wait it out for a half hour or so every time I want to play. (Oh good, it loaded the Minecraft screen. Maybe I have the requisite mods now...nope. Missing IC2 v1.95, ironchest 3.3, tubestuff 48.2.1, compactsolars 2.2, IC2nuclearcontrolv1.1.6, EE 1.4.5.1, and immibiscore48.2.1). Edit: So, after another long wait I realized I had it set to development builds. It looks like mo'creatures is included in 3.1.0, cool! Anyway, after a long wait it will work. Hopefully this is fixed soon. I'm willing to work with the devs to get it fixed if needed.
6. General troubleshooting procedures (Delete, redownload, reboot, delete, redownload, reinstall java) etc have been observed to no effect. My little brother just walked by and saw me sitting staring at the launcher screen. He informed he his Technic launcher is misbehaving as well. My geek intuition is pointing toward my Linux gateway. Should I whitelist any Technic IP addresses? (Also, is there any way I could be in a blacklist?)

The banner displays for quite a few minutes, then the login screen will appear with the login prompt grayed out. After another long amount of time, it will allow me to log in like normal. 8. On the benchmark chart, the Sempron 145 scores 863 whereas the E-350 is at 726. The AMD board I was looking at isn't explicitly designed for 24/7 operation, but the Intel board is (and the Intel CPU scores 800-something). It's likely this Sempron CPU requires an active cooler and it will require a motherboard not designed to work low-power. I do have a Core 2 Duo E7500 to use to host, but I'd rather keep it set aside to host the VMs I shoot at with Backtrack Linux and not have it powered on all the time this summer. I have no AC in this room at the moment and next week it's >100F outside. Overclocking usually causes a logarithmic spike in power consumption/heat output after you get past a certain spot (usually ~3%-6% of the base clock depending on processor generations). It's definitely not what I'm looking to do with this system. ;)
9. What, you mean you aren't joining? :'( Kidding. On average I'm expecting 3 people on including myself for certain, an additional 3 friends have requested an invitation and then a few who are getting one regardless of if they want it or not, and they're all allowed to invite whoever they want. When people are on, there'll be 2-4 people on, with occasional arranged parties that will double that amount. I can't fit more than 8-10 people on my upload bandwidth, so after that it's a moot point.
10. The old machine ran 4 different HDDs internally and has had 3 die in the past year. They're sort of half-dead as what they do is disappear until the machine is power cycled, which tells me my data is not quite safe. The old machine runs an Athlon 64 3200+ venice core on socket 754. I've attempted to reinstall the gateway OS I had on it and am having trouble. I suspect the drive controller on it is messed up as all of the PATA drives on it are doing this, but the SATA drive that I had on it has been fine. I've swapped motherboards around and re-learnt that one is compatible with absolutely nothing, the other lights fire to its third RAM slot if you install anything in it (I remembered this and did not have to re-learn it. haha), and it's an awful lot of trouble to get an old Athlon 64 back in action when it can't host anything. I'm looking at low power consumption processors for a reason. The machine runs 24/7 and I don't like noise. I know these are low performance processors, but the system power consumption is <60W at load, which really appeals to be considering these Athlon 64s were ~140W at idle. What low power CPUs have you all used, so I can compare benchmark results?
11. I ran a ClearOS based Linux gateway until about a week and a half ago when a hard drive died. None of my older systems are cooperating so I'm looking at building a new low-power system to use as a gateway (or installing ESXi on a mid-spec system). I'd like it to run Tekkit if I do build it. Assuming bandwidth is not an issue, what do you all think this will do as far as running a Tekkit server on a Linux distro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131697 (CPU benchmark: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+E-350 ) or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153229 (Benchmark on same page) This for RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231424 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231213 with the Intel board) At most there'd be 8 players. It'd likely max out at 4.
12. (I'm having fun, please don't take this as rude or mean spirited! ) Objection! First, software modifications have precedent set in favor of them ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_copyright#Fair_use ), second they don't have precedent against them except for specific types of modifications. Thirdly, by screwing around with Minecraft you are insuring interoperability with your code. Since Minecraft is implicitly programmed to be incompatible with your code (no public interfaces), punching a hole in it to make it work with your code is ensuring interoperability. Granted the code is dependent on Minecraft, but many programs running on Windows are dependent on Windows and they get treated as their own separate products. Considering precedent, there's an inclination toward modding being legally protected. Yes, a lawsuit could be filed, 60% chance the company would lose unless the modders ran out of funding to fight the lawsuit (which is the real threat). Regarding APIs, Mojang is free to license their software on a case by case basis. To my knowledge, Bukkit had their own license before Mojang officially partnered with them. I can't say anything about the other APIs
13. Why aren't there links to Wikipedia? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decompiler#Legality http://www.program-transformation.org/Transform/LegalityOfDecompilation Copyright only applies to distribution. Hence the name "Copy" "Right", or "Right to copy" and not "Right to modify". There's a reason people aren't in jail or sued over cheating in online games. The EULA can prohibit modifying the game, but when a cheater is caught they're only banned from the service (as long as they don't cause monetarily measurable damages). The only thing companies can do about mods is "You may lose access to services attached to this software if you modify it".
14. There are .cfg files on the server that let you modify the EMC values of every single setting. I think /tekkit/mod_EE.props is it, but my server is offline so it might not be it. ( http://forums.technicpack.net/index.php/topic,6725.msg42366.html#msg42366 )
15. The chicken-or-egg back and forth made me chuckle, like write only memory.
16. Not quite, but almost. The mods are like fanart. They don't contain original Minecraft code. http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/javaOO/accesscontrol.html The mods use public Minecraft methods, Tekkit uses what the mods don't hide, more or less. The times where there are exceptions aren't noteworthy. Mojang has no ability or right to sue a mod that does not contain Mojang code unless said mod is explicitly against the law, I.E. a crack, and then those laws vary from country to country. (I miss programming so much.)
17. It doesn't matter. The only issue Technic could have is if a modder sued them for illegal distribution - or made enough noise saying they were going to. In which case Technic could simply add it in to their downloader to download the original mod from the mod maker's source, and apply any changes or secret sauce to the mod after downloading it from the authorized distribution source. There is no moral ambiguity over usage of the Technic pack or Tekkit. There is no legal gray area outside of distribution. Modders (or even programmers) may NOT prevent end user modifications of their mods or software, just distribution of their own original code. (Mentioning reverse engineering here would instantly identify someone as derpier than a post-Simon derpy bird.) This means that, if software/unmodded code was name brand patented craft paper and mods were home made dried spaghetti, no one can sue if you distribute spaghetti to glue on the craft paper. Tekkit happens to be a particular glue-by-numbers spaghetti-on-paper crafting recipe, and that makes some spaghetti makers very angry, and Tekkit might have to stop distributing spaghetti, but spaghetti recipes are out of control of spaghetti makers and they'll just have to get over it, or stop making and giving away spaghetti. (Noodles.) No EULA is applicable. Notch prohibits the redistribution of Minecraft code without an explicit exemption. This does not make him anti-modding, it makes him anti-forking. I'm not sure what kind of bastard he is to make us eat spaghetti without a fork, but vikings have some odd feti obsessions.
18. You could start it off with a sign room explaining the map that you have to walk across a floor switch to get to from spawn, and end the explanation with "You had 10 minutes from entering the room before the nuclear reactor blows up and you lose. There's a compass in the chest. Head northwest."
19. We could call it the "French patch", because this is farting in sirsengir's general direction?
20. There used to be a PDF on the Tekkit download page, it's MIA. What I'd personally try next involves getting your hands dirty. First, I'd grab Notepad++ if you're on Windows, http://sourceforge.net/projects/notepad-plus/ Secondly, on your server, go to /tekkit/config/, and start popping open config files and scrolling until you find block IDs. I.E. IC2.cfg contains IC2 block IDs. I noticed EE mod IDs are in the file /tekkit/mod_EE.props . The microblocks are going to suck no matter what. What I'd do is write down the order the microblocks varieties come in, in NEI, and use that to your advantage. So each time you have a new item to put in, you know the next X IDs are going to be a variation on that microblock item. But, before you start doing that, you might use the search function here and make sure no one else has tried this.
21. I'm noticing under the file /tekkit/mod_EE.props there are a ton of "AllowX" entries, I.E. "AllowCondensers=1", setting those to 0 might disable the items too. It could also make everything blow to the Nether and back. Using PermissionsEx you can blacklist certain items for certain groups instead of disabling things outright.
22. I would recommend Worldedit with the caveats that it doesn't copy/paste marble/basalt/marble brick/basalt brick appropriately, and probably doesn't do any other blocks that have dmg values beyond what is in the base Minecraft game, with the second caveat being you only want to entrust worldedit to server ops who you trust not to seriously mess up your server, so your ops would have to transfer stuff over. Worldedit's main page is here: http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/worldedit/
23. It's just disabled for you and your friends specifically. It works fine for everyone else. It's a conspiracy by all the religious institutions of the world (THERE IS NO ILLUMINATI, WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT?) to punish you for not reading the FAQ to all life (Exodus 20:1–17 visible here: http://www.technicpack.net/faq/ with commentary on these passages on the Minecraft forums here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/488434-124-zeppelin-029-wip/ ) I'm sorry you have been unjustly victimized and cannot join in the airship wars.
24. As weird as this is going to sound, I shut it off to do an update, booted it back up, decided to try to update worldedit to use worldguard, loaded it all up, and my load averages were down near 2-8% with nothing going. I figured "Heck, why don't I toss modifyworld on and see how it works", I go ahead and do so, I go from 2-8% idle load before any players join to ~20% with one player on. Now average load is between 10-20% with no one on. All I can say about this is that if anyone has a problem with unusually high CPU usage with modifyworld, update worldedit. I still had an increase in my load with modifyworld, but overall there's a lot less going on.
