What do you need to make a mod

I've decided to make a mod for tekkit that I'll eventualy add vehicles to. I want to know what software you need to make a mod that would be compatable with tekkit?

Notepad++ and you need to know how to code Java and how to add sprites and textures to your code. IE if I created a Dildo.class file I would need figure out how to get a Dildo sprite to work with it.

If you don't know Java, and you want to make a Minecraft mod, then that is step 1.

What kind of programming background do you have?

EDIT - Learning java is your step 1. Whether it comes from books or online tutorials is completely dependent on your personal learning style.

Can you take some coding from other modders, it will help a lot with vehicles and aircraft.

I fear chunks will never load at supersonic speeds. :D

('Commentary') The MiG pilot fires on the Town of people block but then the server goes down because of chunk loading failures!
