LandmineGT Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I have a Tekkit server and it seems to be using higher than normal bandwidth. Around 200 KB/s per player at times and as low as 20 KB/s per player at other times. I've done some testing and having players not move or even look around the bandwidth varies greatly. What is the typicial bandwidth usage range per player? Is there something wrong or is this normal? Nobody is complaining yet but I'd like to avoid getting to that point if I can.
Magister Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 different mods can cause different amounts of bandwidth usage, also the more thing updating around the player will also increase it, i know from running tekkit in the past it can cause a large amount of bandwidth at times
k7s41gx Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Various things on your server such as pipes transporting items, amount of chunks a player is currently loading, to even a players amount of packet loss can make your bandwidth vary greatly. I wouldn't be concerned about it until your players start experiencing large amount of lag. You can also try setting your view distance to 5 (or lower) in your server.properties file. This will help how many chunks are sent to each client upon connection and movement.
Markarthian Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I've seen that updating your java seems also to reduce the bandwidth usage. That may be wise to do anyway.
Magister Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 reducing the view distance can cause mobs to spawn alot less or even not spawn at all, since the number of loaded chunks is used to determine the mob spawn caps, but it does help with server bandwidth
pixlepix Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 The next time super-high bandwidth comes on, make a list of all the locations players are at. Do that each time, untill you have a list of suspect locations.
Magister Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 sometimes it isnt just location but the players themselves, if you use netstat you can see which connection and there for which player is using the bandwidth
