I would dearly love to be playing Tekkit on a server with my friends, but the area I live in has approximately two internet options to choose from: "slow" and "slow". Seems that every Tekkit server I've tried to run regardless of the hosting company, has always been exceedingly laggy, even on brand new worlds. So I figured, "Why not cherry pick the mods I like, and create a custom pack that's a bit smaller?" Which is exactly what I did.

I haven't had any issues with the pack in single-player, and even after running the server for a week or so, all the mods seemed to be playing nicely with one another. I've got a whopping three players on, and rarely more than two of us at a time. Everything has been largely fine, up until last night, when the server dropped myself and my friend, and was just ... down for roughly 30 seconds. If that was the only time it happened, I wouldn't have been worried, but it's been occurring at seemingly random intervals ever since. Sometimes it's within minutes of the last crash, and sometimes it goes an hour without an issue. There doesn't seem to be a crash report anywhere, unless I'm just looking in all the wrong places.

So, at this point, I feel like I may be in over my head. I'm bringing in the big guns, i.e. posting here for help, because I know a lot of you are far smarter and far more knowledgeable than I am. I'm sure this is something really silly that I've done wrong. Be gentle with me, and thanks in advance for any help anyone offers!

I use pretty much this exact collection of mods plus about 70 more. Everything works flawlessly. Obviously this is only anecdotal but I see nothing in your client log or my client and server logs which would indicate a problem of any sort. What other information can you give us?

  • Are you running the server on the same physical system as your local client?
  • How much physical RAM does the server have, or your local PC if both on the same system?
  • It looks like you are giving your client 1G of RAM. How much are you allocating to the server?
  • What server binary are you using? MCPC+? Basic Forge?
  • What is your view distance set to in the server.properties file?
  • When the client seems to hang are you still able to type commands and receive output in the server console?
  • Are there ever any errors/exceptions in the server.log or ForgModLoader server log file? Socket timeouts would be expected if you are getting kicked.

Do you kind of follow the direction I'm headed here? Any other pertinent information would be helpful.

First of all, thanks for coming to my aid! I'll tell you everything I can think of.

  • The server is not on the same system as the client. It's hosted via BeastNode, on a nice little plan with 2g of RAM. Up until we started having issues, it's been working flawlessly, and I had been planning to scale the RAM back a good bit.
  • I'm not using MCPC+ at this time; it's the latest version I could find on http://files.minecraftforge.net/ (Forge for 1.6.4, 9.11.1.965). I hope that was the right idea, but if not, I'm sure I can switch to running an MCPC+ server.
  • The view distance is set to 10.
  • When the client hangs, I often have trouble accessing the server console. Many times, even when the page loads, none of the buttons work, either, so no stopping the server or restarting it until it's done doing whatever it's doing while it's frozen up.
  • Sometimes, I do get errors, but they don't seem to occur when I have issues (aside from those nice generic "endOfStream" messages sometimes when we all get kicked). An example of some of the console activity:

That's just an example ... it pretty well always looks like that, when it's doing anything at all. I'm at a loss as to what's going on, but until we started having problems, everything was so smooth, I figured we could probably just let them go for a while. Which sounds terrible to me now, ha ha.

Another thing to note: just to rule out any possibility of anything having been built on the server that could cause problems, I went ahead and started a nice fresh world. Within about five minutes, as we were goofing off, smacking each other around, we got booted again.

I'm beginning to seriously suspect I need to talk to BeastNode about this, honestly, but I'm definitely interested in anything you or anyone else can contribute to this. I've never tried my hand at making a pack before, so I was expecting something to go wrong.

Ha ha, I was a little suspicous it was something on their end after I made my initial post. Too many things that just didn't make sense. I've submitted a support ticket with BeastNode. Hopefully they've got some good news for me in a day or so.

Thank you for your time and effort! This is exactly why I love this community so much; there's always someone with the HelpHammer, waiting to pounce on posts like mine.
