A non-matching version of the NEI plugin would break the NEI listing, recipes, etc. for RedPower, yes. It sounds like you're putting together your own "mod pack", so that would be the first thing I'd check.

I use Alt+0176 (°) and Alt+0216 (Ø) quite often at work. There are many others that make similar characters and are very simple to use. Hold the Alt key, type in a character string, release the Alt key. Voila! Edit: Very, very, exceptionally and completely ninja'd.

I have nothing personally against Macs, other than that I believe they're overpriced. However, it's probably going to be hard to get tech support for them simply because most of the people that could troubleshoot something like this...don't have Macs. And yes, this actually is the place for this. It's a bug that causes the launcher not to work. You have tried the Mac launcher, I assume? Failing that, see if you can get a newer version of Java.

OP: More than likely, you have an active firewall that's blocking the port(s) you're trying to use. How to fix that is beyond me, since I don't use that software.
