So it apears that Mojang is the target of another copyright lawsuit. This time by a company that has patent rights for "a system and method ... for preventing unauthorized access to electronic data stored on an electronic device." What do you guys think about this? Just curious because apparently the plaintiff has already won/settled with Microsoft.

Also, I was reading through the PDF Notch made available and noticed this...

"Android based applications for use on cellular phones and/or tablet devices that require communication with a server to perform a license check to prevent the unauthorized use of said application, including, but not limited to, Mindcraft."

What game is this? Notch/Mojang is making a new game?!

I sense a touch of sarcasm in your words, but mindcraft is probably a typo, since "d" is right aside "e".

And, wondering, but do we know who is this plaintiff?

Yes I am aware of the fact that it was likely a typo. It amused me that in this otherwise pompous sounding legal jargon, the writer managed to misspell one of the most important words in the document. I have never heard of the plaintiff before but have read that he/she/they may have already settled or won in court with Microsoft for an infringement of the same patent.

EDIT: After some further research I have found that Uniloc (the company that is suing Mojang) sued Microsoft and won. The decision was then overturned by a judge who ruled in Microsoft's favour. Uniloc then appealed that ruling and won. Microsoft finally settled out of court to the tune of $388 million. Also he is the co-inventor of the indispensable, everyday item I am sure you are familiar with, the "shade saver" (cords used to keep sunglasses on your face; aka sting tied to sunglasses)

Just checked their website, and correct me if I'm wrong, but are they suing Mojang for the login/password account system used in the launcher? I mean, isn't this system used by loads of people already? Or is it all about something else.

I think it is the actual code that checks to see if you have bought the game before giving you access. They sued Microsoft for the "Try before you Buy" technology and are using the same patent. I don't really see how they are related, but I could be misreading/not understanding. I only have basic legal knowledge (a few uni courses but nothing in depth) so I may be misinterpreting the wording of the patent and the PDF provided by Notch. Likely it is the "DRM" that is included in almost everything these days.

taking bets on how long it will be before notch challenges these guys to a quake 3 duel.

Count me out, he actually seems to be quite pissed off at these guys. It is however early days... We should invite them to settle their differences in the P.A.I.N.S forum!

EDIT: Also the company is also suing EA and possibly Ubisoft. Meaning that they are possibly responsible for the awesome always on DRM used by EA and Ubisoft! They just get better and better.

If it is shopped it wasn't me. I also really hope its true because I want to see the look on their faces when they realise that they actually have no income other than suing people for infringing on that patent and that it is now gone.

Oh look, more demonstration of why software patents are a malignant cancer on this planet. Thank god I will never have children, because it would be a violation of human right to subject them to the shithole our world has become.

I don't personally know, but where did you find it exactly?

Patent number: 6857067

Application number: 09792045

Put that into: https://ramps.uspto.gov/eram/patentMaintFees.do

Hit the "Get Bibliographic Data" button.

It looks like they petitioned after the patent expired, paid the fees, and got it reinstated.

So the image is legit, but old data that is no longer relevant.

Thanks for the update. Too bad I was really hoping they had just forgotten that it expired.

Well that takes a big ego to do. I wonder who this company thinks it is?

Kaker for President, 2016.

Why then? He still has a shot in 2012.
