VideoBoy Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I left µTorrent open for a whole night after downloading a movie. The next morning I got this: I run 2 MC servers so I always close it after the download is done, but I slipped this time... It's funny because I got a letter last month saying they increased my data cap from 250 gigs to 330 gigs. Before that, I didn't even know I had a data cap. Before Minecraft server hosting I did have µTorrent open 24/7 seeding and I NEVER ONCE saw this message. I would download gigatons of shit I don't need (and I still haven't bothered to unzip a lot of it) and I was NEVER informed of anything like this. Ever. Now I leave it on for one night and I suddenly hit 90% of my cap? What the hell? I've been running a public MC server for over a year so that's not the problem either. This is the FIRST time I see this crap. Anyways, my question is: when does Comcast ship out the bill, and how painful should I expect my death to be once my father sees it? EDIT: I can't log in because I don't know the password. Neither does my dad. He though I knew everything. Derp.
Torezu Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Your answers: once a month, and very. I'd call Comcast immediately.
VideoBoy Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 Your answers: once a month, and very. I'd call Comcast immediately. Well shit... Now I'm scared. Do you know how much per extra gigabyte? O_O
Jay? Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Oh god, this is bad news. I've never once abided by my data cap with them, and if they're going to start actually billing for it I'm going to have to switch providers sooner than i thought. EDIT: also, who signed up for the service? They should be able to use their regular email to get their account info sorted out.
Torezu Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I was being mostly sarcastic. I'd still call or email them right away, though.

You're one of them picky fellas who can't watch boobies in standard def, ain'tcha? I'm with the Comcast guy online right now doing bureaucracy so I can get my damn password to check my damn data usage. Wish me luck.
Electrobrandino Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Things like this make me appreciate my job 10 fold.......I work for an ISP that is 100% fiber optics.....you have a dedicated line to your home, no shared bandwidth, no caps, and speeds anywhere up to 1Gb down and up. Gotta love it :)
VideoBoy Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 You're one of them picky fellas who can't watch boobies in standard def, ain'tcha? I'm with the Comcast guy online right now doing bureaucracy so I can get my damn password to check my damn data usage. Wish me luck. Oh WOW. Never mind that post. Turns out I've been exceeding my cap for the past 3 months but those were my courtesy months so they didn't charge anything... Funny how I've had this service for over 6 months. Looks like they reset everything when I upgraded to the 50Gbps plan. 343GB on May 608GB on June 503GB on July So I would've paid $160 had it not been courtesy. Screw that. *goes into router config, cuts max upstream by 4 and sets downstream to dialup*
Jay? Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Well, for one thing, yes, i am the kind of girl who won't watch things unless they have decent resolution, but that's not what kills my bandwidth. What kills my bandwidth is the fact that my roommate and i both play online games, and use Digital Distribution solutions to buy our games. That puts us squarely at about 600 gigs a month, if you include all our streaming.
Xylord Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 You're one of them picky fellas who can't watch boobies in standard def, ain'tcha? This forum rarely made me laugh as much as right now. Don't worry, I did the same error with Merchant, though it wasn't in an as embarrassing context. Anyway, I don't see how I could survive with data caps. I mean, I see something I want, I download it. I'm very bad at keeping track on things like the quantity of data I uploaded/downloaded. I got a thing similar to electro's, but no fiber for me, sadly. At least I haven't got caps.

The internet isn't very eco friendly, isn't it? Take anything that streams static content like Youtube or Netflix. They should download the videos to your computer and just playback the cached version if available, and delete from cache after a few months. I've watched the entire Kyle XY series three times over since I have Netflix. How much data is that? I could've saved a third by using cache. Sure I could get it from Piratebay but then I can't use my little Sony thingy to watch it on my living room on our huge TV. They gotta make internet services more compact, IMO. Too much wasteful data flowing around.

I was about to explain this is probably a conspiracy by the providers who made an alliance with such sites so they can make more cash by having such wasteful transport of data but... That ain't me. :D

That ain't me. THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN THINKING TOO! You're right! There's no other way to explain it other than lazy programmers who don't know how to program for hard drives...
Torezu Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 You're one of them picky fellas who can't watch boobies in standard def, ain'tcha? Your assumptions just had their standard effect. Jay? is...not a guy.

Xylord Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I realized that: But hey, "fella" doesn't have to imply male, does it? And I know girls who like boobwatching. The awkward levels is rising uncontrollably. My awkward meter is about to implode.
Torezu Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 But hey, "fella" doesn't have to imply male, does it? Yes. Yes it does.
VideoBoy Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Yes. Yes it does. [count] informal 1 : a male person : fellow err... sory, mi no spik inglish veri gud.
The_DarthMoogle Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I always tend to go for the ambiguous route on the internet. It's a lot easier, and more formal.
freakachu Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 comcast has had what I would call a "silent cap" for a few years now. it's rather ridiculous to have such caps, but most people never hit them so the ISPs can get away with it. I think that will begin to change as things like netflix get more and more popular, and people start wanting to stream or download things in 1080p. in any case, I'd start watching what I was downloading were I you. it's pretty easy to avoid that cap. even though I get pretty much all my games through steam or other online distribution type things and torrent the occasional HD video along with a lot of youtube vids, I manage to not hit the cap basically ever. that includes things like downloading guildwars 2 (a lot of gigs). basically, don't download things unless you're going to use them. downloading stuff "just because" is kinda pointless to begin with, anyway. it's even worse when you've got a bandwidth cap. Jay?, that must be a lot of games you two are buying per month. either that or you're redownloading/reinstalling them a lot.
Jay? Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 We do by a lot of games, and do some redownload/reinstalling them, but mostly it's the online gaming that kills us.
freakachu Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 We do by a lot of games, and do some redownload/reinstalling them, but mostly it's the online gaming that kills us. that's rather surprising, to be honest. most any online game I can think of uses very little bandwidth. though I don't actually know if that's the case with minecraft, I think MC uses quite a bit. in general though, you'd be using more bandwidth to stream a youtube video than you would playing an online game, even WoW uses almost dial-up levels of data. that must be a LOT of gaming.
Jay? Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Well, part of that gaming involves hosting a private tekkit server, so there's that.

My servers aren't that popular. So I hit 100% yesterday and today I'm already up to 112%. F*** this. It's only the 22nd.
Jay? Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 You have a different Cap display than i do. Mine only displays the 250 gig cap.
