NEI Not Working!!!

Ok, so I have been wanting to play Tekkit Classic with recipe mode so I don't have to look up everything on the internet. I already looked up the videos that tell you to press the O button but it didn't work. When I go into the mods button in the start menu it tells me I'm using NEI 1.2.2.4 if that helps at all. Please help me, I really want to play some Tekkit!
