Slowpoke (Feed the Beast creator) on the Technic pack
Killer-of-Lawyers replied to killerx09's topic in The Whale Box
This is something that can't be rushed. If it collapses while the technic team is trying to get together to discuss things, then it won't because of the delay. -

Well, to be fair I was thinking more if the thread was made and it wasn't just ignored, just everyone wanted out (Which is what I suspect would happen to some degree.) That said, it's not an unreasonable request. I don't know if it will happen, since that'd be something for the team to decide and it's just cheapshot right now, but we'll see what happens. I think Danidas has the right idea for how it should be done if it is done. Also, you're right about the clueless. It's one of the reasons I hate the topic at all. Still, though you're on the opposing side from me, you're making an effort to explain things to people, and I can't fault that. -

Some thoughts I have as a user. 2 Is kind of unreasonable. Open source is open source. Other than that, it's fairly level headed, beside siding with the bees guy. I find it hard to believe that inserting malicious code to go after the end user comes from anyone who doesn't think of themselves as John Galt. I think the example falls short because it goes like this. I've got a water spout out on my porch. Every day someone drinks from it. I make it clear that I don't want it drunk from. It's still drunk from, so I put poison in the water to make the person drinking it sick. That's not ethical at all, is it? It's a bit to close to my button issues for me to ever consider, however, it's in the past. Finally, the big issue comes out to be handling consent. What do you do if there's not enough consent to make a pack? Turn the switch off on the current users and have them hope the FTB pack comes out at some point? That seems a bit punishing to the end user, and I think that should be avoided. I haven't seen a serious grievance from the modders to the end user. To the pack creators? Fine. I can see them having a reason to be upset even if I don't agree with their alien desire for control over their mod. But turning the lights off for thousands of current users seems more directed at the user than Kaker and company. How would you handle that, slowpoke? Is the end user a part of this? Are they collateral damage? You said you care about them. The modders care about them. Shutting them out would be an action that would run counter to that, would it not? -

Except that if you post about him double posting before he double posts he can't make a double post thereby meaning you shouldn't be posting about him double posting but then he'd be making a double post... -
Technic was made to make playing modded minecraft easier. What's wrong with helping people mod their minecraft that's modded by technic?

Killer-of-Lawyers replied to killerx09's topic in The Whale Box
Of course, from the end user, what's the difference in respect if they use technic or not? Is the arcane use of unpacking the jar and adding forge and railcraft in yourself as opposed to having it come in a neat package really part of something like respect? That always seemed wierd to me. There's a lot of "users who don't know how to mod shouldn't be using mods" going around at curse's forums that I see, and it boggles my mind. -

Well, you didn't exactly need to post it. No one needs to talk about shit. Except for plumbers. -

To be fair, the modding team here can keep ontop of any fan boys. Still, removing mods from the pack is kind of a catch 22. If they all want their mods out, then there's no pack, and there's nothing for us end users to do. Still, it wouldn't hurt to try, I guess. Also, bridges are nice, but there's two sides to the bank of any river. Slowpoke has shown that there's something to work with at least, so here's to something happening. -

At the very least, you all could colaborate on something that doesn't have to do with the mods. The launcher. I like the technic launcher for it's ease of use, but I can't say I wouldn't mind if it was improved. As it has nothing to do with the mod packs, you could easily colaborate on launchers, and still have seperate back ends. -

Out of curiosity, if the launcher is the hardest part, why don't you use technics? It's got it's code available after all. I have to say, I'm wishy washy about this subject now. I want to thank Slowpoke101 for, while being a little insulting at times (Which I'm not going to blame him for. I'm insulting all the time.) for taking the time to have this discussion. I'd also like to thank Cheapshot for being open about things on his end. I guess I'm torn between wanting whatever works out the best for the end user, and the fact that I do kind of have a chip on my shoulder with some of the modders and the comunity they foster. It really all comes down to copywrite. It's like a terrible Rand novel. The modders act like their copywrite on a mod they made for another game is tauntamount, and they're going to run off from the comunity that leaches from their greatness (After a 200 page speech by John Galt.). This personally rubs me the wrong way. People are important. End users, consumers, all of our systems, even copy write, should be done with them in mind. I can understand this a bit in the sense of a business protecting the software it's made, but modding is the modification of already copywrited code. It's not personal work to start with. The modders do make an effort, and they get credit for that, but the infrastructure the mods are made on is not their own. In my ideal world, this would be done in an open source manner. After all, with out the ease of decompiling that java provides none of this would be possible. In saying this, I can freely admit that a lot of my problems stem from a deep set political anger, and it is probably not healthy that I've been directing this at the community or the modders. So I apologize for all the times I've reveled in the pissed off mod makers in the past. Cheepshot and Slowpoke having a civil discusion about this is way better than the vitrol. I ask that other people out here that are reading this give them a chance to talk things out. I want to see where this goes. -

Holy shit, the veil? Does that mean that Kaker is like... some kind of vampire?! Awesome! Edit: On a more serious note, how is him saying that he doesn't have to prove anything hiding behind a veil? I don't have to flash my papers at every cross walk to the police, do I? I don't have to prove a lot of things in life. Can you honestly blame Kakermix for saying he doesn't have to prove anything when he's had to deal with this community for a year? Sounds like Kaker's more patient than I am. If I was in his shoes I'd be telling people to fuck off left and right. Being tired of being asked to jump through hoops to prove legitimacy by a bunch of idiots (At least judging by the average post on the curse forums, or avatars for that matter. Seriously. Posts that are nothing but diamond emoticons made by guys with megaman avatars? It's like walking into a shitty daycare.) isn't just annoying, it's insane and insulting and a bit degrading. So if he told you he doesn't have to prove to you that he's legit, then yeah, he doesn't. Turning around and claiming that his refusal to jump at your command is some kind of veil to obscure a lie is down right disingenuous. It's sickening, and symptomatic of everything that's wrong with this community. -

I am curious to see how they handle the launcher. I doubt the flames will ever die down though, but to be fair, I don't want them to. Although the idiot modders are disheartening, the rabid fans are hilarious drama. -
Why not give idiots what they apparently need?
Killer-of-Lawyers replied to LazDude2012's topic in The Whale Box
Well, I'm more concerned with the mod maker being a douche than him leaving forever. Mods don't die, but their makers can be a pain and insert malware and generally give their product an icky feel, al la flower child. Like the example listed, an echo chamber comunity can ruin a game. Same goes for mods. Mod makers will start pushing out crap and having their praises sung for it. I'd rather not see that happen in the game that is my go to. -

I thought the donation hijacking post was amusing, but the post by anzor that sparked it off in the first place where he voiced his displeasure for Tekkit was kind of disheartening. There are a lot of mod makers out there that make mods I love, but I just can't abide by their stance on these things. Why does the minecraft modding community have to be so toxic and alien compared to other contemporary modding communities? I remember when I first found out about thaumcraft, and Anzor talked about how technic is one of the things that got him started in modding. This insular echo chamber they have is going to be the death of minecraft. I think I'd almost rather read Kerberos's forums these days. I'd really hate for the loudest voices to end up being like that place, and turning all the modders into little Mecron Jr's. -
Let me know if you need an address to serve papers to. I'd be happy to provide it to your solicitor, good sir.

A VPS will function the same as a dedicated server with the same specs. You should be shopping for specs. Ram, Connection, all of that good stuff. Try various companies out and see what works. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. Familiarize yourself with linux and setting up a basic box and you'll save quite a lot of cash.

As far as I can tell, the Aether people drank the kool-aid (Original trademarked drink property of the modder, do not steal or use in your pack.).

It's a shame, I think he does really good work, but if he decides to install malicious code then he's going to do it. I hope he comes around. It saddens me that this is the only modding community where permissions even comes up. About all I can do is just make sure that my donations go to the cool modders out there, like the Thaumcraft guy.
