launcher marked as high risk?

Question

Posted

my anti virus keeps deleting the file claiming it is high risk.

i'm using norton 360 and it tells me it has received bad ratings in the community and so has been flagged to be deleted :/

this is what it is flagged as from the norton site.

"WS.Reputation.1

Updated:

May 13, 2010 8:18:54 AM

Type:

Other

Risk Impact:

High

Systems Affected:

Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000

Behavior

WS.Reputation.1 is a detection for files that have a low reputation score based on analyzing data from Symantec?s community of users and therefore are likely to be security risks. Detections of this type are based on Symantec?s reputation-based security technology. Because this detection is based on a reputation score, it does not represent a specific class of threat like adware or spyware, but instead applies to all threat categories.

The reputation-based system uses "the wisdom of crowds" (Symantec?s tens of millions of end users) connected to cloud-based intelligence to compute a reputation score for an application, and in the process identify malicious software in an entirely new way beyond traditional signatures and behavior-based detection techniques."

not sure if you can do anything about that on your end but thought it was worth a mention. either way officially cant use the technic launcher at all without having my anti virus disabled which i am not going to do obviously.

You could add it to the exception list. TBH, I'm pretty sure the only reason that it is "high risk" is because it isn't from a well-known, assumed safe publisher.

Of course, it could be full of malware, but I doubt it.

The gist of that message is basically we haven't seen this file from many of our users so we will label it as high risk because of that.. Unless it actually flags it a virus there isn't anything to worry about

Long story short:

Stop using Norton. It's not a good Antivirus, it doens't even stand up very well to the free version of Avast.

Gee, cocky.

What worked for me was disabling downloadinformation in the Settings under Network.

How is that cocky? im not saying that i'm not cocky, but Norton blows, regardless of my attitude.

Norton is shit yes but it is better than a lot of other stuff. i've tried many other things before and they never seemed to do anything. i got norton and it detected shit load of stuff straight away and has been actively detecting stuff ever since.

computer has been running the best it ever has with it on.

I just use Windows Security Essentials. It's free and doesn't give me any trouble. Norton is absolute garbage.

Or pay for Kaspersky. It's currently one of the best anti-virus there is.

You would be suprised @ how many files were left behind by Norton. Personally I like Eset Nod32.

You know what I find funny I always see that dang Norton 360 advertisement over on the right side bar.

I actually have been using avast for about 2 years, and am quite pleased with its performance. I've never had it fail, and the only annoying thing is when it shouts "VIRUS DEFINITIONS HAVE BEEN UPDATED" at me as im going to bed.

AVG free isn't bad, it easily caught the PDF deployed rootkit that symantec corporate edition at work ignores.

McAfee is the only legit one I know of that's worse than symantec.

AVG is better then Norton, but I feel like its too obtrusive. A real bloated beast. I have no idea what the best is though. I just stick with what works well enough (and is free).
