I have to admit I find command blocks really interesting. They do offer many possibilities, and it's one of the rare things that weren't already done by mods before being added in MC.

Command blocks are interesting, but they're only for server ops (for obvious reasons), so... it's useful for server admins, regular players won't be impacted all that much probably.

I can't really come up with a Technic/Tekkit oriented use for the command block though.

In adventure maps, I'd rather have mechanical solutions to things like triggered events.

But making text appear in the chat would be a lot more useful. (Could have a lot more dynamic NPCs, for instance)

And books. Yes, our server will have a public library. Maybe an ASCII pornography section too (not my idea).

I've mentionned this notion at some moment in this forum... Might I have a free subscription?

Come on. Think about it.

What the hell could Mojang do better that has already been done?

Well, if they are smart, they'll just use the existing forge API. the only problem I could see with that is them not getting permission (anyone else think it's really stupid that the makers of Minecraft need permission to implement code from a mod for their game?). But knowing mojang, they'll do something incredibly convoluted that doesn't work, or does a terrible job.

Well, if it is a decent api, it will encourage way more modded servers. (also, servers might one day be able to use automatically installing mods, like what has been done with texture packs. [i know, unlikely, but would still be incredibly cool.])

The main reason I haven't jumped into modding headfirst is because the lack of an API and the fact it's so close to being released.

That's an unfortunate approach, as there are plenty of mods that were fine without an official API, or those using the (fairly robust) third party API (Forge, as an example).

I've also got this (unsubstantiated) gut feeling that the "official" API will get pushed back, again, but that is just my paranoia.

I believe so too, mostly because there hasn't been any mention of it since 1.3's release.

Ever hear of Forge? It ddoes almost exactly what you just described. Forge mods can be dropped into a mods folder, very similar to the way texture packs currently work. as for auto installing mods, if mojang used the forge api, they could do something along those lines. But as I've said before, Mojang will probably balls it up and make some convoluted, shitty API that doesn't work.

I meant how servers can reccommend a texture pack and Minecraft will automatically download and install it. I actually use forge right now.

Take a look before you shoot it down. The Bukkit team is developing it, so have some hope.

Well that is some good news. Why do I not feel hopeful? is it because I watched Direwolf20's video in which tahg (a member of bukkit) said that until then, he hadn't know how fence gates worked. as in, up until that exact moment, he had no clue how fence gates work. For some reason, someone like that working on the Modding API makes me think it will be crap.

There's been some stuff, but not a whole lot. They've got an official github repo for it, but it hasn't had any public pushes in a month.

Tahg isn't with Mojang anymore.
