Matthew Carver Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Hi there Tekkit Gurus, I run a 15 slot Tekkit Classic server, and I'm thinking of upgrading to the new Tekkit My questions are: - What is the minimum amount of RAM I would need to have 15 people on at once with no lag? - Are there any tips you can give regarding disabling certain mods, banning items etc. so that the server is as secure, stable and lag free as possible. Thanks a bunch guys Quote
cyberskid Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I'm no expert but I'll speak from experience. I run my server off 2 Xeon Quad-Core Processors with 4GB ram. I have java set to run @ 3GB. And it runs super smooth of course for 2 players. Your lag will mostly come from your bandwidth but if your not experiencing issues right now on Tekkit Classic you should haven't any problems with this release. I use all the mods in the server pack so I haven't tried to disable them. I'm sure you can delete the ones you don't want to do use out of the mods folder and that'd disable them. You may try one of the server tools at the bottom of the Tekkit page for managing the server. Hope I helped a little, s.kid Quote
Matthew Carver Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 I run my server from 1.5Gb of Ram and its hosted, and there isn't much lag (if any). I'll give this new release a try Thanks for the help Quote
Feekkee Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 My server is an core 2 duo 3.0 GHZ with 8 GB ram and using 4 GB of that for my server. And its an regular 160 GB 7200rpm hard drive. We are now 4 peaple and the server didnt like when we where teleported back from Limbo. Quote
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted May 10, 2013 Discord Moderator Posted May 10, 2013 We are in a time of rapid change for the pack. Just the change from v1.0.5 to v1.0.6 made a HUGE difference on the server I run for a few friends. We went from 1+ megabit per player back-channel usage to averaging around 100 kilobit per player usage. The server was absolutely hammering kernel I/O buffer space before the upgrade which had us at well over 100% CPU load frequently. Now, even with 5 active people in difference areas, even mystcraft ages, we are at a solid 35% CPU and no TPS lag. I guess what I am trying to say is things are likely to change in the near future. Just give it a whirl. If you are paying for a host, you can always switch tiers if it isn't a good match. Quote

Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted May 10, 2013 Discord Moderator Posted May 10, 2013 You need to use whatever statistics and profiling tools are available for your operating system. I'm running Linux (as one should, IMO) so most of the necessary tools are built in. Quote

I turned down the Limbo respawn distance from 40000 max to 1000 max. Quote

Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted May 11, 2013 Discord Moderator Posted May 11, 2013 I truly have no interest in getting into a Windows vs. Linux forum war, so if anyone is inclined to do so, please don't. That being said, yes, I feel that Linux (nearly any modern, "full" distribution works fine) provides a number of advantages over Windows for hosting something like a MC server (vanilla or modded). A few of the advantages: Native application to let multiple people view/use/monitor the server console from anywhere at the same time Better native tools for monitoring and tuning system resources Native tools for doing quick, easy, de-duplicated backups Significantly fewer resources required by the OS leaving more for user space applications Totally free Quote
Feekkee Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Ok I truly have no interest in getting into a Windows vs. Linux forum war, so if anyone is inclined to do so, please don't. Those things sounds nice to have. But I ment more for performance for the server. Say that I install ubuntu server on a machine and host my mc server on that. I'm not looking for any windows vs Linux war ighter, just wanna see what other users experience are and thoughts about testing my self Quote
