i could probably just as easily ask this kinda stuff on the mcf.net forums but seeing as how it was yogbox/launcher that got me down with this stuff; HERE WE ARE.

so researching with the compendium. pretty much the whole deal i guess is:

anything in the game(though, artifacts being the best) > fragments of lost knowledge > theories(profit?)

when i opened my first obelisk it was pretty dandy as it had a void interface which i used to raid a ton of other interfaced chests. bottom line? i had alotta stuff to research... buttt apparently there's a god and he hates me as all i seem to get is void chests. YES I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO CRAFT THEM. I UNDERSTAND. so does that mean there's only a few things that each fragment of (blah) knowledge can get you and you research other items for... other things(crystals for crystaliser?) or is it pretty much just everything turns into fragments and then it's random from there on out?

Thank you Jay?, that was my thought as that information is found in these forums and in the Thaumcraft 2 wiki. I have helped and answered so many questions before I realized these questions exist because people are too lazy to really find the information out for themselves.

To: theinbetween-

my recommendation to you is to search Google and/or these forums for the information you seek on research in Thaumcraft. I spent 5... count them (* 5 seconds *) to type in thaumcraft 2 research and *poof* the answer is found!!!

good job internet! still, the wiki is intentionally vague. maybe i was too vague?

maybe you could've answered the questions i asked directly or also share your experiences as this is what forums are for.

pretty much all the wiki says is, 'anything can be used' ... which is still not what i am asking.

In the three days this thread has existed have you managed to figure out how to experiment what different items do in thaumcraft or have you been F5ing this thread seeing if someone will hold your hand throughout your tc2 experience?

Well...

Obelisks have nothing todo with your research. The only thing that helps are the items you get from those Void Interfaces and chests. Stick those in your Quaesitum (That compendium or whatever you called it, your writing table.), and put some items as a booster. If the research is successful you'll get a fragment of some knowledge tree, depending on what you researched. After that research that fragment, to get a theory for a specific item. Research this theory 5 times to get a piece of paper which shows the crafting recipe for the item.

You do know I learnt all that from the thaumcraft 2 wiki? If this dosen't help I'll try my best to ans the rest of your questions. I've practically read the entire wiki.

Yet all this time that you have been dicking around, you could have found out all you needed, or actually learned enough on your own to at least ask a question that isn't half-assed and shitty,

You post a question if; it isn't anywhere else i.e not on a wiki, or you find nothing with Google (Our almighty God). And if it IS on a wiki, but you feel you aren't quite getting what it is saying, you look to see if that mod has a discussion (thaumcraft does in its wiki), or FAQ to confer to, as there are many more who play that mod, than just those who use a modpack, and THEY are probably more knowledgeable on the subject. Then, and only then...

Do you post a grammatically correct question with more than "i r cnt reed wikee so tull me hw stff werks" with a specific answer in mind such as "I have looked at the wiki, and am still not quite sure how the research system works, I understand that I get knowledge fragments of different types from different materials, but why am I getting the theory for Void Chests repeatedly?"

And we, the forum-dwellers, would look on in awe at your use of punctuation and say "Well, if you have already gotten the discovery for it, than make sure you have read it before you research new theories in that branch."

And if you, the currently ignorant munchkin with no avatar says, "But I did, why isn't it working correctly!?"

We, the forum-dwellers, would say, "While we have not yet encountered your problem, try basic troubleshooting steps such as; clearing the cache, or backing up your worlds and re-downloading the Box"

And if still you said, "I have done all you have asked oh mighty dwellers, I have done all that you have suggested and still to no avail! Even on new worlds I am able to repeat this tragic event with precision, no matter what I do!"

Then we, the saddened forum-dwellers would say, "Alas my son, for we do not know, now take your question to a higher authority, and post your problem, in the correct format on the bug forum."

And you, the one with the big, doe eyes would say, "Thank you oh wise ones for your assistance, I will do as you ask. May you all live long, and prosper."

And with a disheartened sigh, we would part, two vessels a million miles away on a stormy sea.
