Exploring my new tekkit server map and I cam upon a massive crater/ravine of pure black nothingness. When cows and sheep are pushed into it....They behave very strangely.

Without more information I would guess that you are seeing unloaded chunks. Entities (of which animals are members of) will act "oddly" when they move into unloaded chunks. How to fix them? Bigger question. However, this sounds like a basic Tekkit issue which should be posted in the Tracker for Tekkit at the top of this page.

Thank you for your reply, plowmanplow. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that  I changed the ore generation values for my server. I'm pretty sure I have many things set to retrogen. Perhaps it's the retrogen setting that is causing this problem?

I get "holes" in my world all the time.  It's a slight bug with vanilla code.  Sometimes several chunks can appear to be not there anymore.  If you log out or save/quit, then login/open the save, the holes will be gone.  They also fix themselves with time, in the case of single chunks being invisable.  Or in the case of the long trenches to the void, you can also just move far enough away from them that the chunks they represent unload.  When you return to the same area, the holes will usually be gone.

 

It happens for me in strait vanilla minecraft as well.  But not as often.

Dont know if its a 1.7 thing but when you see that press F3+A to reload your chunks and that should solve it ;)

I get the void trenches regularly even without Optifine. Seems to be a fact of life.

I can't seem to find where I learned this information, but go into your chikenchunks config file and set clean up time to 0. No more chunk voids. This may have to be done server side for SMP.

Also helps server side to force generate the world with a plugin such as world border.
