LittleMikey Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 So, I know this is probably going to be a very vague question, but I'm looking at buying a dedicated Minecraft server for me and a few University friends. Probably going to be no more then 5-10 people online at any one time. Basically I had a few questions about buying a server, I did a search but couldn't find any of these answers here. 1. How much RAM should I be looking for in my server? Most hosts seem to suggest about 512MB for 10 people, but I'm not sure if Tekkit requires more then the reccomended. 2. Do I need to find a server host that specifically hosts Tekkit installs? I found one, Treepuncher, who charges extra for the Tekkit install, and doesn't show how much RAM they are giving me, but they have a host in Australia which I need. Or does any host that allow FTP mean I can install Tekkit myself? 3. Is there anything else I should know before committing to buying a server? I'm sure the good Technic community has advice they would love to share :D Quote
bastrian Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 A Tekkit server normally consume 1100-1500 gb ram, but reccomendet is 2gb ram. Important is that the server is launched with specific parameters, for the rest it does not need a "special" tekkit hosting. Advice? Install the following fixes/Patches: http://forums.technicpack.net/index.php/topic,2804.0.html http://forums.technicpack.net/index.php/topic,4645.0.html http://forums.technicpack.net/index.php/topic,5663.0.html http://forums.technicpack.net/index.php/topic,2834.0.html If you play only with you friends use whitelist, because there are alot of griefer around tekkit. Hmm, okay, thanks for the advice! I'll see what hosts I can find that offer that kind of memory. Quote
LittleMikey Posted May 5, 2012 Author Posted May 5, 2012 Try http://treepuncher.com/ Thanks, but if you had read my post you'd have seen that Treepuncher was the one I was considering ;D Quote
RyanTheAllmighty Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 Dont go with TreePuncher. I did for their Australian servers. Their server are incorrectly configured and when I had my server on there it was crashing CONSTANTLY every 2 or so hours involving me to get on and manually restart it which would also not save the server as their online control panel is BAD and the stop/restart commands have no safe shut down and just kill the process which means everyone loses their items and it rollsback to the last time it saved which can be a long time If you have a choice, dont go with TreePuncher, the also charged me and refused to refund me because for half the month I had already paid for when i wated to cancel because their servers just constantly crash. I'm sure the good Technic community has advice they would love to share I am using Treepuncher to host my Tekkit server. I asked TP about the RAM allocation and was told they allocate 70MB per user slot. I asked about this being a rather small memory allocation based on the common statement that Tekkit needs 1 GB or better and was told they have no complaints from the users. To be honest, my 5 slot server does run reasonably well, service and support has been acceptable and I did re-up my subscription. BUT Am now looking for a different host.....thier 5 slot server just doesn't have enough memory to run a Tekkit server. Their support personnel are worthless, their only solution is to start a new world when its obvious the server is starved for memory. Instead of telling me that i needed to buy more slots they kepp saying the world is corrupt start a new one. Quote

Hmm, that doesn't sound good. I see that they claim to provide 48 hour trials, but whenever I try to apply for one they just say it's "sold out". Quote
TheWoody Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Yeh, they only do vanilla servers as trials, not tekkit, and they don't have any trials left to give, hence the 'sold out' Quote

Jay? Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Try beastnode. They seem to hae gotten pretty good marks from the community at large here. Quote
LittleMikey Posted May 8, 2012 Author Posted May 8, 2012 Try beastnode. They seem to hae gotten pretty good marks from the community at large here. Yeah, I've looked at BeastNode, currently i'm weighing up the differences between them, Treepuncher and Hypernia. BeastNode does look great, but only US hosting like most others. Hypernia has hosting in the city i'm in, but are quite expensive I'm curious as to where you would find a server with this much RAM. I found one, https://secure.get-sourced.net/cart.php?gid=16 which seems to offer a great deal. My problem is it's US hosting, when I'd prefer Australian. Tho US hosted servers aren't too bad. Quote
arons4 Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Using fluctis hosting myself, only had it for a few days, but so far so good. Didn't have to pay any extra for tekkit(except more ram use). I´ts much cheaper than the one posted earlier, seen no real lag on the server so far and support has been good, they have a good control panel and you can get direct access to your server files using ftp as well as editing them from your browser. Jay? Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I want that 32gb stick of ram. It is sexy and i will have its children. Quote
Torezu Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 http://www.techpowerup.com/157593/New-Intel-Server-Board-to-Hold-1-TB-of-RAM.html Hold, yes, but the sticks don't exist yet (that I know of), so my statement stands. Quote
Neowulf Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Hold, yes, but the sticks don't exist yet (that I know of), so my statement stands. Board has 48 ram slots, 48x32gig=1736gig=1.5TB of ram 1TB sticks may not exist, but it is possible to load a server up with that much. Untested, expensive as all getout and you'd have to pry them from Jay?'s NSFW grasp, but possible nonetheless. Quote
rsdoherty Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Avante Hosting 2Gb $16 I can set it up for you if you wish 48 slots :) Quote
Torezu Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Fine. Possible, with all the conditions you said. I'd like to see the heat sink for that. Also, I'm not going anywhere near Jay?'s NSFW anything. :) Quote

SebastianK94 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 When I got a VPS I used creeperhost, which did nothing but impress me. Excellent service and quick responses combined with a stable server for a good price. If you're looking for a VPS I'd definitely go with them, however if you want a true dedicated server that might be another question entirely. Quote

They seem to be good, tho they charge extra for support, and no Australian hosting sucks :( Quote
Jasonsj10 Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 I recommend using Beastnode as your host. They have a tutorial for installing Tekkit. They have amazing support, great staff, FTP, and good bundles. I've used them for 6 months almost now Quote
