  1. To the admins/mods;

    I know you are all working on the forums here, and I thank you for all the hard work you guys have put in. I was kind of unsure at first, but I'm liking the new forums more and more as time goes on, I think in the end the change will totally be for the best, and I'm grateful to you guys for going to all that trouble to spruce up the forums.

    I have a suggestion though. (You've probably already thought of this, but I'll post it anyways on the off chance you haven't/to draw attention to the idea.)

    I feel like it would be helpful to the overall state of the forums if it was made clear to every new member where the tech support stuff goes now, especially now that there's a clear and separate sub-forum and tracker system for it.

    Would it be possible to do one of those messages like the "new policy on harassment" banner on the old forums? Where it goes away after you hit the X once, but shows up for every new member?

    In addition, maybe the "Tracker" tab at the top could be renamed to something more obvious, like "Tech Support" or "Bugs and Issues"?

    I dunno, just my two bits. Thanks for listening!

  2. Not to mention that railguns need energy on the scale of a large city's power average usage per month on a single-launch basis.

    Oooooooor we could ignore that and just blow stuff up because it's cool. That sounds like a fun plan, I like that plan. This is a good plan.YOU CAN TRUST ME WITH THE RAILGUN. GIVE IT. NOW.

  3. The magnetic fields would fry circuitry, that's why we need optical.

    Oh, right, right. That. I thought you were talking about the speed at which the charge propagates/problems with it cutting off if the barrel is too long and gets broken mid-launch or some such silliness.

  4. Need to get optical circuitry working so a multi-stage coilgun can be a viable launch mechanism.

    Well, my design was to just have multiple power supplies, (IE; huge high-speed capacitors or something along the lines of the way they amplify lasers for fusion reaserch), running to each section of the barrel that would trigger as the one behind it went off, but that would work too.

  5. I've actually toyed with a similar idea that would essentially use the fact that magnetic fields can work just fine

    from slight distances to combine a regular gun and a railgun into one monstrous tube with pockets of propellant all along the sides. One use only, mind you, and I'm not sure how it would actually perform, but the idea's cool.

  6. And if people would stop making HUGE freakin signatures. now where was i.... oh yeah AAHaaaahhhhhAAHAHAHAAHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH

    There's actually a setting to ignore all signatures... I'll enable that later if I start to get annoyed.

  7. So, my thoughts. (Not that they matter all that much);

    I like the new color scheme. I'm not sure about all of this newfangled complexity, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

    I really don't care one way or the other about signitures, but I am very thankful that they don't allow images. That was the one thing I really hated about signatures, giant sigs with flashing colors that appear 20 times per page.

    My only real gripes are these;

    1) The new profile page system feels overly complex. If it's possible, I'd be in favor of reverting to the simpler system where what is put on your page shows up nowhere else, as opposed to the current system of both outgoing and incoming page posts showing up on my page.

    2) The "like" button. I really can't help but feel like it's a gimmick that should be avoided for many reasons, not the least of which is the tendency for it to become a status symbol to have more likes than someone else. Are there already plans in favor of or against it?

  8. Technic Forums, today I bring you a host I found that has unlimited bandwidth and relatively fast upload and download speeds. Copy.com is great because they give you 15 GB of free space and unlimited bandwidth. I know I sound like an advertisement, but trust me they're not perfect. Direct links are hard to get a hold of and the interface could use some work, but besides that it's a relatively good host. Just wanted to share this with the community XD

    The other one I would recommend would be Ubuntu One. Not crazy fast or anything, but bandwidth is essentially unlimited, and it's pretty easy to use.

  9. I... What?

    This question makes no sense. Max modpacks for what? A mode for I to increase this?

    Please attempt to english again, and we may be able to answer your question

    If my noob-ese is correct, he either wants to know the maximum amount of packs his account is capable of creating for the platform, or the max amount of packs he can have in his personal launcher.

    IIRC, the answer to both is essentially infinite.

  10. While I have a 64 bit os, I've tried both 64 and 32 bit java to see if there was a problem there and nothing changed. Is there anything specific you recommend switching my graphics card to?

    I think you misunderstood him. We need your OperatingSystem, (windows or mac), and exactly which version of java you're running.

    Also, you might want to try updating your graphics drivers, or seeing if you have a different dedicated graphics chip onboard instead of the integrated one.

  11. You realize a live streamed minecraft themed puppet show would probably pull in 10x the donations of this b-team stream, right?

    I would pay much moneys to see the Technic crew put on a puppet show and get a download of the resulting comedy gold. I don't think I'd even care what the money went to at that point. You could send all of the money to Obama's 3rd term campaigning fund and I'd still buy it.

  12. I'm not familiar with Linux, does the Mint distro have a Web Broswer or GUI for me to install Java and Minecraft?

    Of course! Most every distro does. (except for the bare-bones ones, like ARCH which even works on super low-end machines. Minimum system requirement for that is 64 MB of RAM.)

    I'd give either mint or ubuntu a go. Flip a coin or something, their main difference for you would probably be the UI. Try out both and see which one you like/which one works better for minecraft. You might also want to try out a slightly lighter distro, like Xubuntu

  13. I'll give it a shot, would a 4 GB Flash drive be enough though?

    That's plenty for everything you could need. You could probably install java, the Technic launcher, have a handful of packs, (and a box full of worlds), in there, and still have ~2 gigs left. I'd recommend trying out some of the free Linux stuff you can get from whatever software store is bundled with your distro while you're at it. Heck, dump some tunes to listen to on there too. (Some tunes. You don't want to fill the thing up too full. As for the distribution to use, I'd recommend Mint.)

  14. Or maybe I could setup remote desktop with my personal computer at home?

    Unless you have some kind of dedicated high-speed direct link, the latency from that would likely be horrible enough to make any games unplayable. In any case, IIRC most remote desktop schemes need admin to install.

    Like freakichu mentioned, if you're allowed to boot to portable media at your school, I'd go with some kind of live Linux setup. LiLi's nice for doing those on flash drives, (super user-friendly, it even auto-downloads your chosen distro for you), and it also has a way to setup Linux with persistent storage for your install, so you wouldn't have to re-install things like java on every reboot. You'd essentially have your own computer on a stick. This path becomes all the more plausible if the computer has USB 2.0 onboard. Either way, even if it's a bit laggy because of the I/0, it's miles ahead of trying to use a remote desktop for gaming, at least in my experience.

    (You could also use a portable hhd for this for more room, and if there is a SATA port on the computer, (often combined with a USB port), you could likely get near-full-speed I/0 to it.)

    Link to LiLi; http://www.linuxliveusb.com/

    EDIT: I forgot, it even automatically does virtualbox setup on the stick too. That might be an option if you aren't allowed to boot to your own media, as long as the computer can handle the overhead, but it's also just plain cool.
