BurningCake Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 This has been on my mind lately, and it seems that no one else notices it. Why is there a correlation between Minecraft/Technic Pack users and interest in Asian (specifically Japanese) culture? It seems that every other user or so on these forums has made references and has knowledge of this type of stuff, why so? Are we more exposed to this for some reason? Now, you might be thinking, "But Cake, we're not different, it's the same for everyone else who frequents the internet!" Well, from my past experiences with Minecraft communities, we have the highest interest in Asian culture, by far, than any other gaming communities I've been in. For example, have you looked at the avatar pictures of our users? Pictures from manga and anime everywhere, seemingly with every third/forth user or so! So, trying not to make this a social scientific rant, what does everyone else think about this odd quirk? Is it true, or am I just insane?
Moderators Munaus Posted September 18, 2012 Moderators Posted September 18, 2012 or am I just insane? Definitly just insane I've mentioned FF too many times here and I have noticed that only a few responds to it. If people are tired of hearing of FF or very few played it, I simply don't know. When it comes to manga/anime, well I enjoy reading InuYasha from time to time. But the only person I've seen that mostly talks about anime is Jay?, so I'm not sure who else here talks about it. People use avatars with a manga/anime reference? By the goddess of Astraea! What has this world come to...? To be honest, who wouldn't be interested in japanese/chinese cultures? They have the best action movies, most of which the stunts are made with little to no safety guidelines followed. They have the best war movies/large battle scenes. And from time to time, they make the most insane games, which many of us love. Im wondering if I should make Gyarados my avatar... or has it been taken already?
NinjaStyle Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I find anime dumb so no you're not crazy.

By FF do you mean Firefall, or are you talking about something else? For if you're talking about Firefall than bro let's go meld thumping. I find anime dumb so no you're not crazy. Well since you didn't put a reason why "anime [is] dumb" it makes you look "dumb".
freakachu Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I'm almost positive he means "Final Fantasy" when he says "FF", but that's just my guess. in the past, I was really into anime. I still have a large collection of subbed anime and sometimes I go back and watch it when I am in the mood. back in the day though, I was on top of the fansubs for upwards of 8 shows per season at all times. in general I try to separate myself from the typical weeaboo type anime fan though. I'm not that guy, I don't have some weird fetish for japan and japanese culture, I just like anime because it's often cool or interesting to me. if there is such a correlation, my theory would be that the kind of person who would really get into technic and all the complex mods it contains is probably a huge nerd. a large portion of huge nerds have an interest in anime/asian culture to some degree.
Moderators Munaus Posted September 18, 2012 Moderators Posted September 18, 2012 I'm almost positive he means "Final Fantasy" Freak can see right through me I remember one very good, fun, twisted, f**ked up manga called dragon half. Man this made me laugh... The creators of the series (2 episodes only I heard) got arrested for drugs. If you ever see it, you will know where they got the inspiration from... NSFW Youtube video NSFW Just a heads up. You might not want to watch this at work, as your co-workers will think you're strange

NinjaStyle Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Do I need to put a reason on why I think anime is dumb? If I wanted to watch cartoons I would flick on disney or some shit,
BurningCake Posted September 19, 2012 Author Posted September 19, 2012 Do I need to put a reason on why I think anime is dumb? If I wanted to watch cartoons I would flick on disney or some shit, Pssf, Disney sucks. Their only good cartoons were the classic black and white ones in the 80s.
flamingsalad Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 I'm actually Asian, if that matters. Not Japanese, though. It's not hard to find people that are interested in manga/anime/light novels etc, and they're actually quite common sooo...

Same story here; I like the good, badass action shows, like DragonBall, Neon Genesis etc, without any sort of weird fetish. Do I need to put a reason on why I think anime is dumb? If I wanted to watch cartoons I would flick on disney or some shit, You sound almost disappointed nobody has bitten in your flame bait. Let me explain myself : Saying something is dumb without any sort of arguments, experience in the matter, or knowledge in the subject at hand is never the best way to create a discussion. I'm not saying that was your initial intention though. Also, one of the main differences between occidental and oriental animation is that the occidental one is almost exclusively directed to younger audiences, whereas Japanese is for adults, most of the times. Obviously, I'm not talking about porn here, what I mean is that there are many very smart, brain-twisting, violent and mature anime out there. Watch Death Note, and go tell me all anime is dumb. My 2 cents. :P
SimpleGuy Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 Outlaw Star from Toonami got my interest initially when I was pretty young. Never got around to it until I watched the first ~80ish episodes of Naruto with a friend during highschool (it was interesting, though never been a big fan of it). Then from there I started reading Death Note and Helsing, but didn't finish either and instead stuck to my favorite genre: soft sci-fi: Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell 2nd Gig, Blue Gender, Tengan Toppan Gurren Lagan (guiltily enjoyed it), space-trash-collecting anime title I can't remember, Ergo Proxy, and most recently Evangelion. I plan on watching Gintama, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and two others I can't think of off the top of my head next. EDIT: I tend to like sci-fi anything in general. Books, shows, books and more books and I find anime tends to have a bit of a better selection than american TV shows in the genre. that's honestly the only reason I'm "into anime".

Talking about Evangelion, ever saw the reboot movies? They're amazing in every sense of the term.
Sacrieur Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I've watched more anime than most. I've found it tends to have a far deeper and compelling plot to live action TV shows. Even Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek TNG/VOY pales in comparison to some good anime. But that's just me.

Sacrieur Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Holo is its appropriate translation, whereas Horo would be the name spelled in romaji. Calling her Horo is a bit like calling someone named Alice "Arisu", since the setting is non-Japanese and uses European names. The entire ordeal was created by a fansubber who inappropriately translated the name, and now a good bit of people continue to follow it, despite not being canon. Nonetheless, because of the setting's story and the official position, I adhere to the English spelling since it is intended to be an English (or at least European) name. Also to remain consistent; after all, I haven't seen anyone call Kraft Lawrence "Kurafuto Rorensu", which is just plain silly. It has everything to do with my fixation with proper grammar. I couldn't care less what other people call her.
freakachu Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Holo is its appropriate translation yeah, I know. I just think "horo" rolls off the tongue easier. I don't really blame the fansubbers for this one, since you seriously cannot tell the difference between Rs and Ls a lot of the time in japanese, and it sounds like an r. either way, the point is: economics.
