No I'm not. I created one of the most popular fan sites to one the biggest selling PC game of 1999. The community board had over 5000 members, and was run on very different philosophy to here! I only joined here when my teenage son could not make this darn launcher work.

Maybe due to my age, I am used the old-fashioned ways of gently encouraging people to modify their behaviour, and politely suggesting that they haven't noticed some of the ground rules, seeing the value of nurturing any new members to my community, instead of immediately getting on their case and treating them like retards.

I'm going to let you in on a sad, sad reality: the vast majority of people on any given minecraft forum are anywhere from 11-17 years old and act like they are 5. parenting basically doesn't exist for them and if you try to be nice about things, you will end up with the MCF. we hate the MCF and how they are run. this is a community for those who wish to be able to talk to others in a real and intelligent way. people stay here because the children are not allowed to run roughshod over everything.

because of how the internet is, we are forced to take a really, really hard line lest the line simply evaporate. it's even more important when you consider the demographic this forum attracts.

You must have a huge e-penis. If you are so experienced, why did you just use the words encouraging, politely, suggesting and nurturing in the same sentence as internet?

So you are virtual parents. I'm the father of one of your usual demographic. :)

This has been interesting for me, a real education for how Internet forums have changed, if this is a typical board.

I'll let you go moderate now, and won't bother you anymore with this philosophical discussion.

But I say again, if the site owner wants me to take a look at why the site under the covers is serving the .jar as a .zip to Some Windows users, I'd be happy to try and help.

This guy* should have been banned long ago.

This is the way the community is run partly because this is how I had to build it back when it was just me versus a much much less tame forum. To keep all these disrespectful foul-mouth ragey people off the forums with the limited time I have, I chose to not tolerate the intolerant and set an intellectual bar higher here on the internet than other places.

Then again, I shouldn't be justifying myself repeatedly. This should all be obvious: this is the real world, and no one has time to coddle and nurture each person that visits the forums.

EDIT*: By "this guy" I mean the OP singling out individual people to fuck off.

Because I am old AND educated.

basically, yeah. it's rather depressing to me, but it's how it is.

this is a client configuration problem more than a server problem. sometimes, people will have gotten .jar associated with an archiving program, like winrar or 7zip by accident. jar files really are rar files with java stuff in them, nothing more, so this is why that happens.

I am sure you are educated, but not in the ways of the internet where 12 year olds and troll reign.

Limiting myself to technical discussion now.

On my son's Windows 7 PC MS Internet Explorer thinks that the file being served is a .zip file and saves it with a .zip extension instead of a .jar. Windows itself is associating .jar files with Java.

So IMO it's how the file is being served that is the problem.

I had almost the opposite problem a few years ago where, because of the way I was serving .zip files, Internet explorer thought they were .txt files and tried to display them as text.

I downloaded the file from Firefox and Chrome (to test) and only IE downloaded it as a zip. That signifies to me that it is an issue with IE and not the file.

IE is pretty much retarded and likes to do its own thing when it comes to mime types. often ignoring the declared type in favor of whatever type it thinks it's supposed to be. IE is known for this. there may be a server side solution that tells IE to go jump off a cliff, but I don't know it off the top of my head.

It is always miscategorising my mimes, God damned annoying it is.

Ok, why do 12 year olds always get classified as trolls/idiots?

have you talked to any of your fellow 12 year olds lately? they're all idiots.

hell, when *I* was 12 I was an idiot troll too. I'll even admit it straight up.

Because a large majority of them are.

EDIT: freakachu beat me to it

Good point, even IRL. There's probably only 20-30 in my grade that are fine. (My grade is big.)

When I was 12, the only internet connection we could afford was dial up, and floppy disks were still a feasible form of portable data.

But I suppose I probably would have acted in the same way, if the page ever loaded..

I seem to remember that the pseudo-logic in my server side code was something like:

x=openfile(<filetobeserved>);

Detect Browser

If browser is Internet Explorer

{

<header typex>

<content-type blah1>

}

else

{

<header differentype>

<content-type blah2>

}

readfile(x);

....

Back to the original subject, and pure speculation on my part.

My launcher issue was for a brand new install. I assume that the launcher with its very small payload goes off to the server for the latest .jar file? By the time the launcher stopped for me, it had created the %appdata%/Roaming/.tecniclauncher folder but had not retrieved any files from the server.

Could a recent patch to Windows have caused this fetch of the .jar file to "stop working"?

Oh and when I was 12, man had just walked on the moon for the first time, IBM had not yet launched the first PC, so trolling was kind of difficult.
