I use Alt+0176 (°) and Alt+0216 (Ø) quite often at work. There are many others that make similar characters and are very simple to use. Hold the Alt key, type in a character string, release the Alt key. Voila!

Edit: Very, very, exceptionally and completely ninja'd.

doesn't work for me. Typing alt+123 gives me ¡™£

The trick is to hold alt, type a number on you numpad (off to the right), and then release alt.

OH! I didn't know you needed the numpad!

Or you could do what I did and use word... (Almost all of the symbols that you can enter on word have numpad shortcuts)
