  1. because that totally doesn't reveal were your location is

Because facebook doesn't already have that anyways.

Of course, they now have a phone number, and can use that to find lots of data anyways if they feel like it. (This is a large part of why all those store "rewards cards" require you to give them your email and phone number, it lets you and their advertising partners identify you easily.)

I guess you could use a burner phone or for things like that if you wanted to go to extremes. (At least, assuming your mom is after data privacy instead of just not wanting her friends on facebook to see that she votes on "So You Think You Can Dance".)

EDIT: Apparently adding a 700mhz overclock to my 810mhz card is officially too much. (Instant system hang.) ~+500mhz is stable, but has heat issues. Regardless, I don't think I'm going to bother with laptop gpu overclocking any more, not worth the potential wear-and-tear long-term.

But hey, at least I had some fun and didn't break anything.

Has anyone else here ever done any overclocking?

  2. Yeah, looking around, I think I'll wait at least two months or so. I was going to get some... unorthodox... hardware in the near-ish future, I really need to make sure it works with 10.

Also, this is fun. You should install this on people's computers. They will love you.

EDIT: So, my old core2duo laptop is sitting around unloved and unused. Would anyone care for a KJ Terraria server?

EDIT AGAIN: So apparently my new laptop's GPU, being one of the Quadro models, is amusingly good at overclocking. (For a laptop, at least). Bumped the core clock from 810mhz to 1055, (and by extension, the shader clock from 1620 to 2110) with no real increase in heat output from stock, (It stays at around 70 C under load). The (un-overclocked) cpu is still hotter than it, hitting 75-ish C at some points. The only reason I haven't already pushed it higher is that MSI afterburner won't let me.

I'm probably not going to use it very much, if ever, but it's still fun to know that it works.

  3. Anyone here planning on updating to windows 10 right away? Personally, I'll be on vacation again for a week right after it launches, so I know I'll be waiting at least that long. Probably longer.

Unless there's some killer feature or great performance gains that I haven't heard about, I just don't see any reason good enough to justify moving from 7.

    Thoughts?

  4. Oh yeah, you guys just reminded me that I have a quill-and-ink set lying around somewhere. I should probably get around to actually using that sometime.

Hawaii has great weather, but I just feel like the islands and culture, (or maybe it was just the one I was on), have been absolutely gutted by tourism. It felt... fake, kind of like a lower-key vegas. And I've been to a few very tourist-ey places before.

  5. indeed, such as my logic..
you will probably need to wait ~6 months - ~1 year before a stable one will come out....Roms are easier to make...

Uh, where on earth did you hear that? I don't think that will happen within two full years from now, if I had to guess. Even first-gen xbox emulation is still pre-alpha.

  6. you can also use emulators as well to play these exclusives...

(saying emulator isn't against the rules right?)

    Only old ones though.

I want to try out splatoon and smash, but I really don't want to shell out the ~400$ it takes to get the console + games for it. At that price point I'd much rather just get a big 'ol monster graphics card and upgrade something with it.

  7. It seems like the Fury X didn't quite pan out how AMD was hoping.  They released benchmarks showing it soundly beating the GTX 980ti, but when reviewers made their own generally the two cards only tied at 4K and the Fury X lost at lower resolutions.  Of course that's reasonable, Nvidia's 900-series drivers are mature while AMD's Fury-series are brand new, but that doesn't explain AMD's pre-release benchmarks.  They had to have known the hype would crash.  And, at least at this time, both cards are $650 and the 980ti offers slightly more performance, so it's clear which is the better buy.

Looking around, it sort of bounces back and forth depending on the game being played and who's reviewing it. Even when it does win though, the Fury never wins by all that much. I have to agree, it's a little underwhelming. I do have to wonder what a new set of drivers and DX12 will do for it, but it probably won't be enough to make a substantial difference.

Regardless, I'm sincerely hoping that AMD can become the overall better option though, and quickly. (Relatively speaking.) If they end up exiting the GPU market, Nvidia will have no real competition unless Intel goes off the rails and decides to make discrete chips.

I know I probably don't have to tell you this, but monopolies are really bad.

Inactive or no, as a Kitty Jail user, I obviously have to leave a mark on our prestigious secondary Kitty Jail thread.

  8. I like my explanation better. ;)

I once had a guy hack a hacking game so that we could discuss hacking a different hacking game without being listened in on by the admins.

(Uplink has a working IRC client you can buy in-game. He hacked uplink to give himself enough credits to get it without having to play through the game.)

    MOD QUESTION:

The creators of Uplink, (Introversion Studios), are giving away the soundtrack to the game, but it's in really old weird formats. I took the liberty of converting them to .mp3s, filling in most of the metadata, and making/embedding some album art. Would it be okay for me to link it here?

  9. Alright, nerds. I have three copies of Uplink to give away to those who somehow don't have this glorious game already.

(It's essentially Old Cheesy Hacking Movies: The Game. It allows you an impressive amount of freedom in the game though, I once had someone arrested for 3rd degree jaywalking.)

Either post here, PM me, or message me on steam if you'd like one.

  10. Ohhhh, I didn't notice you were looking at the 290X as opposed to just the standard 290. Now your idea makes a little more sense.

It'll be interesting to see how the new cards shake out though, that's for sure. I'm not actually in the market for a card right now, and when I am, I'll have to get an Nvidia one for an egpu setup anyways, but it's still cool to watch.

  11. I'm going to upgrade my graphics card.  How does this look?

I wanted to get a Sapphire, but it's too long so this is my backup.  It's possible the very tip will fit into the empty drive bays, but I don't want to risk it.

I'd have to agree with Neowulf and say you should wait.

AMD's new cards are coming out *really* quickly. EG: a lot of them, (the R9 and R7s, particularly), come out :siren: literally tomorrow. :siren:

    Apparently the R9 390 will be ~$329, and the R9 390X will be ~$429

If they don't fit, you could just go with the redonkulously tiny-looking R9 Nano, which is supposed to be better than the 290 anyways.

Regardless, like Neowulf already mentioned, it'll push prices down for last-gen cards.

    Sooo... yeah. I'd wait.

    :pcgaming:

It seems weird to say I "want" to have a mental disorder, but for what it's worth: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia

    Also, there's this: https://xkcd.com/936/

I've thought about what that would be like too. I have to wonder if it would make life easier or harder.

  12. Oh my memory is pure ***.

Honestly. I only know about half the names of the people I've been working with daily for nearly 10 years now. My office is only 50 people.

The only good memory recall I have is for movies (which is a family thing, we quote movies and demand the source from eachother daily) and music.

And that's the key for me. Literally. I tend to have a song in my head at all times, so I just type the password out to the beat and memorize it that way.

Interesting. I find it easier to remember passwords, (well, numbers, at least), when I type them out on a ten-key pad or a phone dialer. Then I just remember the "shape" of the number. That, or I can do it audibly, remembering what each character sounds like when spelled out together.

I wonder what other ways people remember their passwords. Pity we don't really have any good system to remember them by smell...

  13. Memory. I used to be a webmaster for an ISP, so remembering 16+ character passwords of pure gibberish on a dozen different systems was a job requirement.

Whelp, I guess you win. I have no witty response to that other than to point out that... uh... I.... can't.. do that? So yeah, I'm stuck with lastpass then, I suppose.

It's not like I'm jealous or anything, baka.
