  1. Wish I could even get 1mbps up , sadly my ISP thinks they're doing me a favor by allowing me to get 0.16mbps up.
  2. If indeed it is the filler... simply deleting the chunk that it's placed in should do the job.
  3. Again, As I pointed out first and as D3matt has re-itterated, you should try running it yourself at home (if it is remotely an option which by your original post I must assume it is) Try running it on your main desktop, or a spare machine. (I really wouldn't worry about weather it's a laptop or not, turn off powersaving, stick it in a cool, well ventilated area and it'll be fine.) If you really want to go for the "rented" option, I currently run my 20 slot Tekkit server with no banned items at all on the Skeleton package, but I'm fairly sure you can get away with a spider. Even with 20 people online I still only use 2G of RAM. (I actually opened mine up to the public instead of just friends, and it brings in enough money to pay for itself and a few extra upgrades/ventures)
  4. I wouldn't build a dedicated machine for it... but it's always better to run it on your own machine first, so that you understand better how it works and how the server interacts with files etc... It also depends entirely on your Internet connection. Check out: http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/ for a rough estimate. I would highly recommend a VPS service like the one CreeperHost offers. I personally use CreeperHost and have done so for about 3-4months now, to the extent I now actually have three VPS's from them to host my Bukkit, Tekkit server and Feed the Beast servers. They have amazing staff and actually take the time to communicate with the customer. At the moment they are currently looking at running an IRC server specifically to streamline real-time communication. The control panel can also install a MySQL and Mumble server on your VPS for a small one off fee, or you can freely install it yourself. They put no limitations on what you can or cannot have on your VPS. I currently have 1 of my VPS's running Tekkit, my website and my MySQL server. Some pro's: Great Staff, Great Service, No Lagg, Good choice of server locations, Great Control Panel, Good range of options to control your server, (You can connect via FTP, SFTP, SCP, SSH and HTTPS), Useful applications to download so you can see and use your server console on your home PC like you can normally when hosting it at home. Useful API you can use to dynamically update your website, or even create your own Control Panel. Great Backup/Restore service from the control panel, It even allows you to perform Remote Backups to one of their secured off-site servers in case of "catastrophic failure" They are constantly upgrading their control panel and hardware to get better performance. They actually listen to their customers. (I have asked for 3 "new" features, all of which were added to their system within 12hours of the suggestion at no cost.) Some con's: Each VPS is initially limited to 30GB local storage (although you can usually negotiate for more)
  5. NoItem or TekkitCustomizer will work just fine.
  6. CB++ build 75 works best so far for Tekkit 3.1.2 I haven't tested 3.1.3 yet, mostly because it hasn't been rolled out as the clients recommended build yet. But looking at the changelog, nothing that much seems to have changed. Lagg Clear is all but essential for any server if you plan to keep it online for more than a few hours at a time.
  7. You may find some of your issues solved by paying attention to this: 20:51:15 [WARNING] **** NOT ENOUGH RAM! 20:51:15 [WARNING] To start the server with more ram, launch it as "java -Xmx102 4M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar"
  8. WoW... De Ja Vu... I'm sure i've seen this thread before a few weeks ago. Anyway... Like Jelato Foot said, items in Crystal Chests and Pipes etc.. aren't actually entities, they are just tacked onto the item/blocks meta data. They may cause some slight graphical lag for some clients running on older machines with very limited RAM and Graphics capabilities. Namely this would show as FPS loss while looking at them (or with minecraft in the same chunk) Be sure that your users aren't confusing low FPS with server lag. The easy way to tell is if the user presses F3 and checks what their FPS is in-game. If it's over 20-25 then it's more likely server lag, If it's under that then 99 time out of 100 it'll be their client lagging, not the server. Also by the way it makes no difference for most people if its any number above 60, as the majority of computer screens can only display 60FPS. I've noticed that the majority of my servers lag issues were caused by players duping things and creating huge badly optimized EMC/EU factories. A good idea is to teach players about painting cables and tubes so that EU/items go only where you want it to go and not in every direction the pipe/cable goes. If you are dead set against the Crystal Chest idea, just ban it out right and make users use the diamond chest. Its the same size and does exactly what you want already.
  9. I think you'll find there are already a large number of threads dedicated to this. But for the most part they tend to include: Run CraftBukkit++ server.jar Build 75 Run TekkitRestrict plugin Run Lagg Clear plugin (the newest version for MC 1.4 works just fine with Tekkit still) Make good use of permissions to restrict which players can and cant use items. Run your server with some custom commands to better define what environment parameters are set. (I sadly can't tell you how to do this, I don't fully understand it myself.
  10. Hi, I'm wondering if there are any alternatives to BuyCraft Premium other than T00thTransaction. If there aren't does anyone know which version of T00thTransaction works best? And does the IPN / MySQL Database need to be on the same server as the game, or can it be hosted on a remote server. (I use a different server to host my website than my game servers)
  11. 2k is a little extreme for a public server, so sure you could see it that way. Although a more typical boarder size is more like 8-10k. But really you can set it to whatever you want. I just prefer to have it, so I don't get some players going 30k blocks away from the spawn or whatever and using up twice as much memory as other players who stay fairly close together.
  12. I'd use the boarder. PvP, raiding and griefing doesn't even come into the equation unless you actively encourage that sort of behaviour. People will always find ways to PvP regardless of where they live or how far away they live. Better to condense players to a given area and save on resources and lag. You are either prepared to deal with griefers, or you aren't. A world boarder will do nothing to change that. Some of my best SMP experiences have been when we had 5 or 6 players living close together, and subsequently started working together to build bigger and better things.
  13. Why would you say that? Plenty of OpenSource/Free software is actually better than many of their proprietary counterparts. Also I'm not so sure they are so small... They have multiple racks in multiple locations round the world, (Mostly Europe and US) They host a fairly large number of MineCraft community projects. I guess they are small enough that they can still offer great personalized customer service, and haven't been tainted by the attitude "we don't really care about the small fish" But large enough that they can get physcial access to each of their machines within the datacenter. Since it's now clear there's not much I can do from within the VM, just going to have to wait for them to come to a solution. (The only reason I know about it, is he was working on it.)
  14. Well from the sounds of what the guy was telling me, just the number of cores, they can't actually assign each VPS a specific set of cores. Hence how this whole thing came about.
  15. Last I checked TekkitRestrict actually uses NoItem to block items... lol.
  16. Thankfully they don't work like that. It's not a shared environment like redstone host or anything like that. It is a VPS and each VPS is "assigned" a specific number of cores, if there aren't enough cores on a given machine at a given location they actually build another machine. For the most part most VPS' have 3 or 4 cores, on a 16core machine.
  17. Don't suppose you've got links? (Unless you mean CB++ build 75, which I'm already using) No, OpenVZ
  18. I know it's not much help to your question but I have to be honest... that config is exactly why I use TekkitCustomizer instead of NoItem.
  19. You can run almost any desktop app as a "service".
  20. http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/clearlagg/files/8-clear-lag-v1-4-2-dev/ I know it wasn't specifically written for MC 1.2.5 R4 but it works just fine.
  21. Try looking at: SpaceBukkit, MCMyAdmin, RemoteToolkit Just remember that for most of these to work, your jar file needs to name "craftbukkit.jar"
  22. Hardware: VPS OS: CentOS Okay, so my Host (CreeperHost) has been doing some experimentation with better CPU Load balancing to try and get some better performance out of their virtualisation solutions. And I was recently told about this by them: taskset -c 1,2 -p PIDofjava The problem is that most Virtualisation solutions are quite ... "dumb" and invariably the first 2 cores of any system will get hammered by everyone while the rest are barely used. (I have a VPS, so I currently get a 3 Core allocation out of a 16 core system.) The general idea is to "manually" force the java process to use different core(s) to the OS/other users. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this? -- For the uninitiated CPU cores are numbered 0 through 15 (or higher), computer math always starts with a 0, not a 1. So Core 0 would be the first core, Core 1 would be the second core and so on....
  23. It's not a case of bukkit using Tekkit... Have you not been reading any part of this argument? Or hell this entire thread and the purpose of it? The point isn't that Tekkit and FTB can't use plugins, its that they can't use a version of Forge which is compatible with bukkit plugins when run with a version of MC higher than 1.2.5
  24. Last I checked, for the most party you can freely distribute your own mod pack within a small community. Not that I've tried it, but doesn't MultiMC also has the option to share modpacks? Anyway it's a null point really... it's more effort than it's worth in my opinion. For those interested the FTB mods which allow some basic commands to be restored can be found: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1484373-142smpfihgus-command-mods-for-vanilla-server/ and http://www.minecraftforge.net/forum/index.php/topic,3319.0.html
  25. Actually we already have this. It's one of the main advantages of the VIP++ rank, that you can login even while the server is full.
