Light switches (usually) don't have buttons. They're, well, switches. As in, levers, but smaller. Many more technical machines rely on switches/levers to control things rather than buttons, because buttons tend to be finicky in many ways. But the way I've always seen it is, the larger a switch/lever is, the more likely it is to be called a lever, whereas the smaller, the more likely to be called a switch.
