.Exe launcher has stopped working - FIX!!!!

Question

Posted

Launcher Version: 1.3.5

Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium

Java Version: 1.7

Antivirus Program:

Description of Problem:

Well i just wanted to post that i have found how to fix this problem, AFTER TWO DAYS. For some reason, the Technic Launcher .exe just stopped working out of nowhere for many windows 7/ vista users. What you have to do is this:

1. open up your start menu

2. in the search bar, type "%appdata%

3. Click on the "Roaming" Folder.

4. Delete The ".Technic Folder" (Note: YOU WILL LOSE ALL SAVED DATA)

5. Use Firefox to re-download the .Jar File from www.technicpack.net

6. Move the .Jar file from your "downloads" Folder onto your desktop.

7. PLAY!

I am sorry to say that you won't be able to use the .Exe launcher anymore but you SHOULD be able to use the .Jar file whenever. All the mods work with the .Jar folder as well, i have just tried them all.

Glad you have a fix. I was having the same problem as you and found that the .jar download worked for me too.

For the record, you can use any browser to download it, not just Firefox. For example, with Internet explorer, you have to "Save As" and save the download with a .jar extension instead of a .zip

Hey there Chubs, glad you found this little known fix that was only sugested to you at least twice and can be found in the COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS sticky that is required reading before you post a bug! It is so hard to find this!

From the sticky...

Not sure what to tell you. A temporary fix could be to use the .jar instead of the .exe which seems to work

for most people.

Also from the sticky...

If no matter what you do, the exe just doens't work, go to your .techniclauncher folder and there should be a .jar in there. If not then download

it from www.technicpack.net and use that.

To be fair Jorcer the common problems and solutions sticky does not say anything about how, with some browsers (including the most commonly used one), the .jar file actually downloads as a .zip file, and possible solutions for that problem. This particularly important IMO because there is also nothing on this board in a sticky that acknowledges that the technic launcher seems to have stopped working for quite a few people, and using the .jar is the only option for some people.

That is a fair point but if you wish I could provide you with about 5 topics that I personally posted in detailing how to fix the jar downloading as a zip. If the people who didn't know what to do had done a quick search, they would have found the answer pretty quick.

I have this problem, and I figured out how to fix it without even looking at the forums, so I'm surprised that people post bug reports about it. It's easy to figure out how to solve if you know even a little bit about computers. But then again, I am a hacker (the kind that take apart software to see how it works, and improve it if possible) and a java programmer (strictly small time. I'm still learning how to code in java, even after several months of programming in it.).

A better fix would be to stop the site from serving the .jar file as a .zip :)

You hacker and java programmer, me sysadmin and php developer. If a site owner would like to share the code that sits behind that "Linux/jar" button on the download page, I could probably offer a fix.

sct is the Admin that is in charge of the site. I don't recommend PMing him though...

The reason it downloads as a zip is because Internet Exploder doesn't read the header files of things it downloads. It just sees Jar files as generic archives and downloads them as such, instead of downloading them as executable java archives as it should. It's nothing to do with the site.

And everything to do with Microsoft making a shit product. Then again, everything Microsoft makes is shit.

Not everything. I loved my Zune.

At least Windows is better than Mac.

Tell me why Windows requires a whole driver install for my motherboard but OSX, which isn't even supposed to work, works without a hitch.

Who said OSX isn't supposed to work?

It should be possible on the server side to force the file to be recognised as .jar archives. Direct URLs to .jar files CAN work in MS IE 9.

Example: http://www.dd.ucar.edu/downloads/ddhl-20071105.jar

However the direct URL on this site does not behave the same way, IE wants to save the file as a zip

http://mirror.technicpack.net/files/technic-launcher-latest.jar

so I would say that IE mangling the .jar file from this site IS definitely something to do with the Technic site/server config or file build.

(For the record, I'm no fan of the MS browser, it's just that we've kept my son's laptop aligned to what he uses at school, which is IE)

Edit: I have suggested a server side fix for this problem by starting a topic at:
