jominer247 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Okeeee Helloooo again. Now I have some points to make on software. The OS of a server will not truelly effect how the minecraft server runs since it is actually on the JVM, Although Linux uses less resources so if you wish to use linux so you have more free resources fine, Although you may have to install the Multicraft Control Panel onto your dedi/vm for ease of use, or you could just use screen. For other reasons i'd reccomend windows server 2012, Now I know alot of people be hatin' on this OS, Its alot faster then home OSs by microsoft may I just say, Yes it takes up 3-4GB of ram from your system, Its also easier to use without the need of screen (windows doesnt have screen) or multicraft.. Although as always, everything has its downfalls.. Linux: Reasons to like linux: It's open source It uses less resources It's free Is something breaks you can fix it yourself Reasons to dislike linux: As always, Linux likes to make the easier tasks in life difficult, its by far alot less user friendly. Windows Server ****: Reason to like W.S****: Its more user friendly You can have more control over your dedi, using disk optimizers which you cannot use if you are on Linux (Either that, but im a noob to Linux and aint very good with commands, as far as I know you can just use a command C:) Reasons to dislike W.S****: It's Not open source. It uses alot more resources (Mostly RAM).. It costs alot of money, depending on your version, (Lol, just use microsoft tool Cx) If something is broken you have to wait for limpdicks at microsoft to fix it. (Get it? Microsoft? Limpdicks? XD) But you know, it really comes down to somethings here: Economy, Linux Less resources, Linux Have alot of money and resources? Get windows <:3 Also. Covering RAMDisk which a server I know of use, It can be fast in certain ways, although is very difficult to use and can be very annoying If you want more RAM, Then go here: www.ovh.ie and buy a dedicated server. Dont like OVH? Ah well, Theres always www.colocrossing.com Errr theres phoenixNAP secured servers.... if you HAVE to D: (There good and know quite a bit about mc, but have excessive costs xP) Anyways. Your choice of OS, Its really self choice, But please, I dont know everything, and we all learn off of eachother, am I right? So if I missed something out or got something wrong, comment bellow and ill add it Joseph @ http://emeraldtekkit.pw ECNetworks LTD.
disconsented Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 You completely ignored the security aspect of my last post, in a server environment (baring a few specific cases) it is ALWAYS better to get the appropriate linux distro. As always, Linux likes to make the easier tasks in life difficult, its by far alot less user friendly. Uh no, this is the same issue that W8 has. People are unwilling to actually learn anything new. You can have more control over your dedi, using disk optimizers which you cannot use if you are on Linux (Either that, but im a noob to Linux and aint very good with commands, as far as I know you can just use a command C:) Again nope, because: Turnkey Linux DIY Distro "Disk Optimizers" are a load of BS baring defragmentation which isn't an issue with SSD's Also RAMDisk is pretty easy to setup Enjin Website *shudder*

Anecdotal Evidence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anecdotal_evidence Because of the small sample, there is a larger chance that it may be unreliable due to cherry-picked or otherwise non-representative samples of typical cases. Anecdotal evidence is considered dubious support of a claim; it is accepted only in lieu of more solid evidence. This is true regardless of the veracity of individual claims. MagicPanda123 Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Uh no, this is the same issue that W8 has. People are unwilling to actually learn anything new. Well that's quite a silly thing to say. W8 and Linux are polar opposites when it comes to user friendliness. I ran a small server off a W8 home comp for a while and it was quite simple to set up. Linux takes either lots of pre knowledge or lots of youtube tutorial watching and thats always a blast...
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted May 10, 2014 Discord Moderator Posted May 10, 2014 An anecdote: I ran a small server off a W8 home comp for a while and it was quite simple to set up. A statement of opinion with no supporting evidence: Linux takes either lots of pre knowledge or lots of youtube tutorial watching and thats always a blast... Just because YOU do not use or understand Linux has no bearing on how fit a Linux OS system is for the purpose of hosting a MC server.

Here is counter anecdotal evidence: I spent an hour leaning how to linux, an hour learning W8 and 2 learning W7
Roversword Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Oh my...some linux bashing again. Some people really need to check their facts and their knowledge. We are not in 1998 anymore (and I mean that for both OS).
jominer247 Posted May 22, 2014 Author Posted May 22, 2014 Guys just to let you know this is all based on my own experience and not evidence. I should not need evidence etc. Its from my own experience as a server/website/database/host owner.
