Those warnings basically mean that the mod author hasn't specified what version of Minecraft the mod is for, at least so Forge can read it. If it hasn't crashed, then its for the right version of Minecraft. Therefore, those are unrelated. Have you tried starting completely over? Deleting the entire server folder and redownloading?

There are some pretty bad mod packs out there, yes, but there are some really good ones too. To narrow down your search I'd suggest looking at the highest voted or most recently updated. Try the search bar as well, of course. ;)

Things to tell your roommate: There are some holes where IC2 was, but only a few and not very big ones. Marble and Basalt have been replaced by White and Black stone from MineFactory Reloaded. Both colors come in much more varieties than Redpower's did. Tekkit Lite was somewhat bloated, and while Tekkit is a little slimmer there is so much more to do. You couldn't go to the moon or build your own space station in Tekkit Lite. Part of the challenge of the new Tekkit is learning to do the same things in new ways. For example, you can't craft a jetpack, but you can add one to your very own custom PowerSuit. The new Tekkit does not rely on Mods that are no longer updating. Eloraam has far to much real life stuff going on to maintain RedPower, and Abalaka is burnt out and is no longer developing IC2.

Don't worry. We'll get an update eventually. First Hexxit came out, and now Voltz 2. The devs are human and (probably) have lives and jobs. Tekkit and Big Dig aren't going away. It isn't possible, short of making your users download a modpack with just that change. Treecapacitator is 100% client side only. There isn't even a jar or config file at all for the server.

It's client-side only as well. Only people who want to live in a Redwood tree have to edit their configs.

Buildcraft conductive pipes in general are bugged. Use Redstone Energy Conduits or connect them directly to the quarry.

Phased pipes don't work. Magmatic engines are fine.
