The Update Failed error (from what I have seen) can be caused by not having all of your Antiviruses AND Firewalls turned off, not running as an administrator, mistakes by the devs (naming files wrong/putting the files in the wrong place) and many other things. Sometimes it affects the Launcher (usually AV's cause this) and sometimes it only affects one of the packs. I don't think yours is caused by any of these things though, because I have never encountered someone who couldn't clear their cache... That seems to be the anomaly that makes this different from all of the others. You are getting a MalformedURLException AND a NullPointerException, which is not very common... Since I have never seen this particular issue, here is a list (off the top of my head) of the less common errors that I have seen 1. If you are using a language other than English, you may get errors (only even seen this with Turkish though) UNLIKELY 2. Not running as Administrator 3. Hidden Firewalls 4. Certain AV's need to be uninstalled sometimes (I don't think yours are on the list though) I will do some Googleing and see what I can come up with.

Could you post the log from after you updated your Java? EDIT: Hold on, you aren't the OP so nevermind. If you have a similar issue, you should post your own bug report. That gives us all of the important info we need to help you.

Because the Vanilla option is general more of an afterthought when it comes to development. It just adds another layer in between you and the game. Also, it generally takes longer to update than the original launcher. I don't have anything against it, but it is likely more buggy and more prone to error than simply using the normal launcher.

Turn off Norton and redownload. Also, keep in mind that the server may not have updated. Try using the recommended build and see if you can log on.

without your actual Java version (unless you are a time-traveller you can't have Java 8) or a log all I can say is to turn off AVG and redownload.

FTB has been in the works for a while, and calling it a ripoff is like calling a movie a rip off because someone already made a movie. Minecraft (due to its coding) can reduce even the most high end computer to rubble. Also, seeing as it was just released, servers have not had much time to install plugins (many of which have not yet updated) Tekkit/Technic has been released for 1.4.2 Tekkit still runs on Minecraft 1.2.5 (as the main version) and as such, all of the mods are updated. The major mods FTB have not yet been updated. Also, Quantity =/= Quality Tekkit/Technic also has a .jar launcher and the FTB team have release an exe launcher. The file creation is fine and you can minimize the log. It just came out, how would there be tons of texture pack for it (and there actually are as many of the packs that work with Tekkit will work for most of the mods in FTB) When Technic/Tekkit is updated, condesors, relays, red matter, etc. will be gone, just like in FTB. Quantity =/= Quality sounds painful It is a mod pack... Of course the mods are the same THEY ARE THE SAME MODS. Quality =/= Quantity I don't see all of these comments you are talking about

Seriously guy, cheap and most of the mods have already told people to cool it with the FTB hate. The devs have no issue with FTB and neither should you. Choice is good. Also, consider reading the rules.
