  1. 2 GTX580s in SLI. hundreds of FPS!
  2. 10 to 1 it was a software firewall then. it's probably already setup to allow java through, but wasn't setup to allow the launcher's .exe through. glad it's working for you though.
  3. if I had to take a guess, I'd say that it is probably representative of an evolution in notch's understanding of openGL as he made the game. I think he may not have had much of a grasp on lighting initially, created the hacked together system the blocks use, then when he decided he wanted stuff in your hand to be lit somehow too, he had enough of a grasp on openGL lighting to use that instead. he just never went back and redid the old code, and now it's impossible to mess with because it's so backwards. or he did the held items differently specifically to try it out and learn how it works. I know I have done similar things, with results that wouldn't make any sense to an outsider like this.
  4. a single client doesn't generally use too much bandwidth, but it would depend on how long he was playing I suppose. if you want a real accurate measurement, there are plenty of free bandwidth meter tools you could use to see how much it's using. honestly, I'd look at netflix, torrents, youtube, etc. usage before trying to get less bandwidth out of minecraft. now, if he's HOSTING a server, that's a whole different kettle of fish. edit: also, don't sign your posts. set a good example for your son and read the rules :)
  5. this kind of thing is extremely relevant with issues like this. what kind of firewall are we talking, and can you bypass it for a test? also, in general if you can't even get the client to download, you have either an internet connection problem in general, or you have firewalls in your way somewhere on your local network. that includes school or company firewalls. lastly, there is no way to bypass the launcher, and if there was it would not be advertised here nor supported.
  6. additionally, your account name is probably also banned, unless you have multiple accounts. I totally don't regret not doing all the work for you now though OP, so thanks for that.
  7. I'm not playing this game. what have you tried so we can just skip past all the stuff you've already done? unless you really want to go through all the obvious stuff that you apparently have tried already all over again.
  8. I'm glad you're really proving me wrong on that. it would be terrible if you had just posted in a way that lends even more credence to my initial assessment. terrible.
  9. I think I've only ever messed with the time frame once. so yeah, not very frequent.
  10. with a properly setup batch file. there are command line arguments to java that will send your traffic through a proxy, I don't know them offhand, but I know they exist. the key piece of information to know is that by default, the launcher actually restarts itself after you run it initially, losing all settings or special command line arguments (like memory limits, proxies, GC settings, etc). in order to prevent this, you must make a batch file that creates a directory called "rtemp" in your .techniclauncher folder before starting the launcher. the folder is deleted each time, which is why it has to be in the batch file and you can't just make it once and leave it. because you don't appear to want to put any effort into making this work, I'm going to leave the specifics up to you and google to discover.
  11. try uninstalling it completely. AVG never really turns off all the way, no matter what you tell it to do. yes, it's that retarded. secondly, if you're getting BSODS over drivers and such, you may have some more serious issues than just the worst free anti-virus/firewall program available. thirdly, random "me too!" guy, I will bet you that you don't actually have the same error and/or problem. make your own thread for your own, unique, issue. also, don't triple post like an idiot while shitting up someone else's legitimate thread. there's an edit button, use it.
  12. remove norton. as in, completely and totally uninstall it. that kind of an error is usually due to firewall software (like norton) preventing network connections. often times, even when such programs are "disabled" or "turned off" they still fuck things up anyway. norton is known to do this. also, I really, really doubt you searched over 400 forums. if you had, you would have hit upon this really basic advice sooner.
  13. at best this belongs in the encyclopedia technica section. however, a vague title with no info int he main post other than a youtube link is not really the kind of quality we are going for here as far as posts are concerned.
  14. if you want to get a handle on the some the crazier RP2 tube stuff, direwolf20 has a really great series of tutorials on it. just skip to the later ones where he goes over regulators and all that stuff. it helped me a great deal when I started learning how to use tubes
  15. the nubcakes nubcakery nubcake and the weak sauces ice cold thick bananawhips
  16. at first I thought this post was going to be a lot different than it turned out. that is terrible, FFGF, and I'm very sorry for your loss. I'd say more but I am distinctly unqualified as I can only guess what you must be going through. my deepest condolences go out to you and her family as you mourn her loss.
  17. it is open source, like you said. if you really want to know, it is probably in the source somewhere. I'd suggest taking a look. as always, you're welcome to fork it just like we did with the spout launcher to create the technic launcher.
  18. yes, yes I was.
  19. how about no. glad you solved your issue though, I guess?
  20. if your client is pulling 15 Mb/s from the server, there's something seriously wrong. though I don't doubt that more bandwidth is used than .3Mb/s. if I had to guess, the .3Mb/s number is for vanilla, or perhaps a world without much in the way of chunk loaders or something. either way, there is no way to reduce the traffic caused by the game outside of simply not playing it. start up a single player world and check out technic.
  21. I'm with the "play vanilla first" crowd. I have two reasons for saying that. 1) you learn the base game, so you can understand and appreciate the changes and additions brought by the mods. if you don't have a baseline, you may have no idea why piping items around is a good idea, or what a redstone signal is in even the basic sense. 2) it gives you time to learn the basics of the game, without all the extra frosting on top. there is a LOT of information that you have to digest about just the base game itself. seriously. it's only getting bigger as time goes by, too. throw in all the mods on top of that and you'll be buried under features and recipes so badly that you may never dig your way out.
  22. well, seeing as how he's still using an aol address, are you even surprised at all?
  23. :iiam:
  24. I know what your problem is. let me know when you realize that I actually know what I'm talking about though.
  25. you managed to associate notepad with .rar files? way to go. find a .rar file right click open with... select the proper program (winrar or whatever) make sure "always use this program to open this type of file" is checked (I'm paraphrasing on the wording, it's something like that. it's the only checkbox available) click ok profit
