Re: Esder scrolls MMO

I'm willing to bet it'll be horrible. I'd bet any money that it'll get massive hype, and then no one will like it.

well I'm sure SOME people will like it. some people still like the original EQ, or UO, or runescape, or <insert any mmo ever here>. I really don't have high hopes for it personally. I enjoyed skyrim, but I would not want an MMO elder scrolls game. who knows, maybe it'll be good but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Esder scrolls MMO

You are still subbed to WoW? What is wrong with you?

10 year old nephew who wants to play, and my sister won't let him online without an escort.

Plus I get cravings and urges occasionally, ones that a long term monogamous relationship with minecraft doesn't quite satisfy...

Re: Esder scrolls MMO

This will probably be the only bethesda game i wont be hyped about. Never been a fan of MMO. Its that annoying thing when everybody goes "Oh looky at me with all my rune (g) armour and i can kill lv 90+ dragons blah blah blah... Its this neverending cock-fight that everyone seems to be thriving to be best.

And if you like to take things slowly, your either left out or ignored.

On a positive note though, an entire world of Elder scrolls to explore? the entire continent?

We'll just have to see how it all works out...

After reading into it a bit more it sounds pretty much terrible so far. They are going to have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to really keep me interested. Sounds like cookie cutter MMO #985.

I'm still subbed because it's my mom who is paying for it. And the fact that she still plays it. She originally got it for my brother, but I think she likes it more than either of us, as we don't really play it at all anymore.

I'd like to point out to you, that it would seem that your only experience with MMO's would be runescape. Just a heads up, that game is /terrible/ by any MMO's standards, and should not be what you base your knowledge or enjoyment of MMO's on.

Runescape is definitely horrible, but what he said can still apply to other mmo's to a certain extent. You've got to admit that many mmo's focus more on leveling, than a singleplayer rpg does.

The reason I personally don't have high hopes for this game is because it will probably end up sacrificing the depth and detail of skyrim, for the scope and size an mmo will require.

See? He gets my point.

Thought i should share this, they give a few screenshots and raise a few questions that i find interesting.

If you dont want to watch the whole clip then here's a few heads up:

They started making this MMO back in 2007, so the team didnt know what skyrim was gonna be like.

The MMO is simply an MMO, with a big sticker that says "Elder Scrolls".

You can be an Emperor? i hope they dont vote "Donglord321" to that position!

I like Runescape, except for the obnoxious anti-botting aspects, and the grindiness requiring the mouse and teleportation. The questing and minigames are fun.

I like WoW, but I despise how they constantly make content and then immediately throw it away again because people have short attention spans.

(Opinions are fun. And we all have them, so there are plenty to go around.)

As for TES:MMO, I'm neither expecting it to be nor hoping for it to be revolutionary or amazing (or actually good). All I care is that it is not sub-based, because I want to go in it and run all around Tamriel like an Argonian with her head cut off. If the game is microtransactional instead of subscriptive (I have no idea how to decline that word in this situation), I will definitely play it just on the basis of exploration.

Just learned that it will have wow-style combat. There goes any hopes of this game succeeding.

See? There's one of those opinions. I happen to think WoW-style combat is pleasantly relaxing. Action combat is great for me if you can button-mash, but requiring skilled combos sucks (e.g., DCUO). Now, I -like- DCUO's combat, but I don't like actually doing it. If there were four buttons instead of two buttons with two modes each, I might like it more.

It all hinges on the economic model, really. I'll accept almost anything from a F2P game, because I can buy what I enjoy and skip what I don't. A subscription game, however, had better blow me the fuck away. I subscribe to WoW because I have a psychological addiction to it, and I subscribe to SW:TOR because it is amazing, and that is about all the subscription I can stomach. Games like DDO (where I pay-as-I-go) or GW2 (where I pay once) are much more pleasant.

So if the game sucks, but doesn't ask me to pay beyond what I think a sucky game is worth, then I'll still play it, because TES is cool.

That opinion is coming from a current WoW player. I just feel it has zero place in an Elder Scrolls environment. Plus the screenshot we've seen looks horrendous, especially when we're expecting Skyrim quality graphics, if not better. I have extremely low expectations for this game, and would love to be pleasantly surprised.

Because a game that just got announced and has an entire year until approximate release goal has the final art assets and rendering optimizations, right? And it's totally appropriate to rejig and reallocate resources out of coordinated paths just to make sure an announcement screenshot is of utmost quality, yes?

(Besides, GW2 looks and runs like a trout's ass in chilled tar right now, and we know it's going to be beautiful on release.)

You're right about the combat in terms of it not suiting a TES game, but I still happen to like WoW-style combat. An MMO comes with a whole new set of variables, though, and they can't just make "multiplayer Skyrim" and expect to not have to abandon the game within months; They have to appeal to a wider demographic, and face it: More people are used to WoW than are used to other MMOs. (That doesn't mean it's a guarantee: It's a wait-and-see.)

When that screenshot is the only thing available, to garner attention, and to attract the customers you need, you're damn right it better be spectacular. Even if they have to make it CGI and just pretend. Also GW2 looked wonderful when I played it, did you not have your graphics turned up? It was gorgeous. And if I want WoW-style combat, I'll just fuckin' play wow.

So...you want them to lie to you on what the game looks like?

On another note, whats so bad about Wow style combat?

The most common complaint that I hear is that it's not engaging, with too much "press and wait". An active style of combat like GW2 and DCUO have seems to be what the complainers want most. I understand their point: A more active style of combat is indeed more engaging, and relies more on skill than the WoW style does (if implemented correctly).

The most common counterargument that I hear (such as from people like myself) is that the WoW style is easier and "good enough". People like me care more about fun than challenge. And obviously we don't see eye-to-eye with people who equate challenge with fun. :P

Yep. Personally, WoW combat isn't immersive or engaging in the slightest, and immersion is a big reason I enjoy video games, and especially Bethesda games.

In many other aspects too. In Skyrim, or Oblivion, I would just wonder off into the wilds, looking for some interesting ruins, or etc. In many mmo's, you're often limited to areas of your level. If they adopted something similar to the radiant quest system in Skyrim, that could definitely help. But that's ambitious for an mmo.

So, I do think this game could be somewhat fun, but I have a feeling it's going to be because it's inside TES universe, rather than the fact that it's an Elder Scrolls game.

I'm okay with that, as long as it's microtransactional instead of based on a subscription. There are so many games on this planet, I don't need them all to give me a nerdgasm; Simple basic pleasure is fine as a baseline.

I'd rather see the art direction that I know will be worked towards, than pixely crap.

The bad thing about WoW style combat is that it gets /really/ boring. There's no skill involved. Anyone can learn to press this button at this time. I mean hell, there are addons that can tell you exactly what to do, and when to do it. Where is the fun in that?
