  1. Like I said before, three competing products will interfere with each other and provide less protection than a single one will. Plus scanning the same file three times creates 3x the wear and tear on the harddrive. If you can't convince them from those facts alone, then sorry, you're screwed.
  2. Better, but still a rather vague answer. Norton has a file exclusion list you can add the launcher to. If you can't make the case that your $30 game is nigh worthless without the exclusion, then too bad. You aren't sure if you also have AVG and McAfee? Rather suspicious, seeing as you claim to have all three of the antivirus products that are often reviled on this board. If you do infact have them, explain to your parents that three competing products will interfere with each other, and infact protects you less than a single product would. Not to mention three products constantly scanning everything is a sure way to destroy your harddrive. Though no matter what, the technic guys aren't about to reverse their stance and add a lot of extra work for themselves just to satisfy a single player, legit account or not.
  3. And what "freakiest antivirus ever" would that be?
  4. Having to use hacked clients to play without a buying the game is actually completely within your control. You're not even the 20th person to ask/beg/con/demand a non-launcher technic pack. The answer is, has always been, and will always be a resounding No!
  5. Don't post a release date: get yelled at by impatient people. Post a release date: get yelled at by 10x as many people because you don't actually have a way of knowing for certain when you can get ahold of updated versions of all the mods and iron out all the bugs created by integrating them. Post progress updates: get yelled at by the same impatient people as above, but with more screams of "You're too slow!"
  6. MassEffect3 Plains, desert, forest, snow, and two swamps all within sight of spawn.
  7. Well that's not very nice, what if he wants to see it too?
  8. The work people put in to save themselves $20... Of course I must wonder how much of their own money those people running mineshafter spend to run a hacked authenticator. Of course if they're actually making money from it through ads, that's flat out stealing.
  9. I know doublepost is bad, and I hate advertising for anyone, but: http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?cm_sp=ShellShocker-_-863043-_-03202012_1 Dunno what the price is going to be yet, I'm guessing no more than $150. Edit: $128, not bad. There's also a 128gig for $110 with $10 mail in rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227776&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL032012&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL032012-_-EMC-032012-Index-_-SSD-_-20227776-L09C
  10. I don't know any OS install that's more than 25 gigs, and I'm dealing with ghost images of user desktops. A 60gig SSD for $90 normally is easily enough for that, a swap file (not best practice, but good enough), and spare. If my computer is starting up, it's generally because it's monday morning. And monday morning is "Help me my password doesn't work!" time. The sooner I can shut up the whining the better... Original boot time before the SSD was around 2 minutes. Our self host quote came out ~$80k/year cheaper than the consolidated datacenter the CIO is trying to push us into, I think we did pretty good.
  11. I specifically said SSD for OS and critical progs, HDD for bulk storage. I know compared to normal platter drives, SSDs are a lot more expensive per gig. But $90 is really cheap for what it does for your machine. My laptop for work will cold boot to desktop in 18 seconds, and that includes login to our AD server. And you want expensive? Try speccing out 50TB of HDD space with tape backup...
  12. On the topic of HDDs: If you're looking for a good cheap boost for your server, check out solid state drives. My work laptop sports a 128gig SSD and holycrap that thing tripled in speed when I stuck it in. Use the SSD for your OS and critical apps, HDD for bulk storage. For data safety either get 2 and mirror or just backup to your HDD array weekly with incrementals nightly. Newegg has a couple good and cheap drives in the 60-ish gig range for under $100. They occasionally show up as shell shockers/daily deals too (my little brother recently grabbed one for $50). Amazon is another good place to look, though check the reviews on newegg for the same model (if they have it). Amazon can be cheaper but I've never trusted their rating system. They show up on Woot too, mainly on sellout.woot. Make sure it's not refurbished.
  13. No, they changed to the launcher to make things easier for everyone. Single launcher for Vanilla, Technic, Tekkit, and Yog. Segregated installs for each so no more swapping. No one has to mess with downgrading then MC updates. Updates are easier for them to push out and automatically applied correctly on our side. Locking out the entitled assholes who can't be bothered to do any legwork getting it working and think everything must be done to please them. That was just a happy side effect.
  14. Hotlinking the launcher to the original downloads might work. Would be a dickish move though. What about a 3rd party donation setup. Donations go towards server upkeep, and extra gets distributed to the mod authors. There's probably some 3rd party website out there that manages donation setups like that, which should alleviate most of the fears you guys are profiting from it.
  15. My midterm project in advanced C++ would only run correctly on the 4th try. I mean you ran it 4 times in the dos prompt before it worked correctly. Very consistent on that, it somehow kept data between executions. I did better than my friend though. His didn't look that much different than mine, yet his compiled into a win3.1 screen saver virus (which displayed exactly what the program was supposed to). The programs were supposed to read in an image then do some manipulations and display the results...
  16. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91166.msg3011156;topicseen#msg3011156 A rewrite of df2minecraft is planned. Of course they spend a couple days just remapping the memory offsets every time toady updates DF, so there probably won't be any work till toady finishes with the current round of bugfixes and settles in to add more features.
  17. Meh, just grab it from the main site. While you're there, check the Modding forum for Dwarf Therapist and DFHack. Therapist is pretty much necessary for any fort of more than 20 dwarves (default allows immigrants to hit 200 population). DFhack give you some really nice tools, a visualizer, and a minecraft map exporter (indev only for now, they have plans on making it current with the new minecraft map format)
  18. DF is awesome, and a little imagination goes a long way with it. It's quite fun to setup entrance hallways full of steel large serrated disc traps (huge buzz saws), and watch invading goblins turn into flying bits of invading goblin. Lots of good mods for it too, and development is constantly progressing so new features get added whenever toady can.
  19. My PC I built almost 3 years ago for $500. AMD quad core 2.8ghz with 4gig ram and a 750gig HD. I run the client on the same machine. Works pretty good for the 3-4 lan/hamachi connected friends we usually have. Though I'm sorely tempted to build a cluster of raspberry pi's when production ramps up, and see if I can make a server out of 10 or so.
  20. I saw one for "Pony vs Pony" with some badly drawn MLP knockoffs. Pretty sure the tagline was "Combat is magic"
  21. Happens all the time to me with normal drops. Been happening ever since my first vanilla server, so it seems to be a longstanding bug with the minecraft client code. Nothing to do with tekkit or any of the bundled mods.
  22. Yeah, I never understood the dumb blonde stereotype. My blonde sister is getting her masters in math right now. Of course we've got heavy norwegian ancestry, my extended family is full of really smart blonde hair, blue eye amazons.
  23. The EMC values for a EE collector and condenser are vastly higher than a simple cobble generator. Plus, why bother with any forestry stuff when you can just EE condense all the wood you want?
  24. Of course I have. Even a 10 year old could guess the socioeconomic ramifications of a fully invested banana farm, especially if they have access to two featherdusters.
