You're right about it not being the first procedurally generated world. Minecraft was based partially off the game Infiniminer, which also had such generated worlds.

Nope, incorrect. It's a proven issue with the launcher and the fact that there is no 1.4.4 to 1.4.2 patch yet (or something like that, maybe it was a problem with an incorrect directory URL on the file server).
