the main problem is most likely that the version you downloaded wasn't ported to bukkit. as far as I know, the version in tekkit is the only version with a bukkit port. were it a bukkit version, you would have been all set as far as server side stuff is concerned. you'd probably also need to get your players to update as well, though.

they actually do. last I checked, pahimar even drops by the technic IRC from time to time. here's the thing though, I don't care if you or anyone else thinks the pack is "not legit" or whatever nonsense. technic lets me play minecraft with cool mods, with my friends who don't care enough about modding to do it themselves as well as removes the hassle of me doing it myself. that's all that matters to me.

there's a few reasons why many people prefer redpower over buildcraft. 1) buidcraft puts a lot of load on a server, simply by being installed. you don't have to have anyone using it to get this performance hit, either. I believe the last time I saw a discussion on this the number was something like 30% of the CPU load from mods is buildcraft. 2) buidcraft pipes can spill. if you are sending items down a pipe and the chest on the end is full, or the pipe goes into an unloaded chunk, the items will simply pop out of the pipe and fall on the ground. this may not seem like such a big deal, until you have a quarry or worse pumping items nonstop onto the ground for a few hours. when that happens, it pretty much crashes anyone who gets near that spot and causes massive server lag. 3) redpower can do pretty much anything BC can do, only better. for instance, the ability to use covers to hide tubes or keep them from connecting to a block or each other. these are just some of the reasons. this is not to say that you're a horrible loser if you use BC, I used it a lot when I first got into technic because it's a little simpler and easier to understand than RP is at first glance. RP is pretty much objectively superior though for anything complicated or on a server.

as someone who actually knows java, and knew it before every even looking at deobfuscated minecraft code, I don't think there could possibly be a worse way to pick up java. you're welcome to have a go at it, but I hope you have a hell of a lot of determination and motivation to do this. the codebase is absolutely horrid and I can't imagine ugocraft is any better. if that doesn't deter you though, more power to you.

in all likelihood, 70% of the mods won't update. at least that's my guess.

there's also the fact that when you run the game, you can hit f3 and it will tell you what version of minecraft you're running.

dude, you're posting on a minecraft modpack forum asking for PC tech support without mentioning important info like "I have a cooling pad because it used to overheat". I'm sure you're a computer genius. you can try taking some canned air to it, but it's not easy to clear out a laptop without taking it apart first. chances are it's dust buildup and/or straight up damaged components like Torezu mentioned.

I'm not kaker, but I'll tell you why I don't think it's happened. in all likelihood, it's because our "rep" doesn't really matter. nor do the various arguments you mention. nothing will stop them from happening and people will use technic regardless because it's a superior product and way easier than doing it yourself. let the idiots who are still agonizing over how "illegal" the pack is continue to be idiots. chances are we don't want them around here anyway if they are like that. the modders know we have the permissions, because they gave them to us. we know we have the permissions because they were given to us. nobody else matters in that regard.

sounds like a heat problem. you could try getting one of those "cooling pad" things that you put under the laptop that has fans to move cooler air through it and keep it from overheating.

no it isn't, I just am too lazy to capitalize proper nouns or the start of sentences. if you notice, I always use uppercase "I" when referring to myself. but yeah, I'm well aware of the proper rules for such things, I just figure if I'm writing something where that is REALLY going to matter, I'll be using a word processor that takes care of it for me. being an IT type, I'm far too lazy to do that work myself when the computer will do it for me

magicka is always a fun one to multiplayer. terraria can also be enjoyable.

are we talking wifi networks? from your description I assume so. can you give us some details about these networks? are they using any kind of WEP or WPA encryption? are they 802.11b? g? n? is your wifi card 802.11b? g? n? have you googled it?

you can also install forestry into technic for singleplayer goodness, without the hassle of running a server. the process isn't too hard either, just get the client version of forestry and drop it into the .techniclauncher\technicssp\mods folder.

kaj, I think you may be under the false impression that we are obligated to "help" anyone who appears to be asking for it. simply put, we aren't. you may look at my initial reply and say, "wow, what a jerk! he wasn't helpful at all!" and while you are right that I wasn't helpful, it's not because I'm incapable of such or immature as you seem to believe. the OP here basically wanted someone to find him a server because he can't be assed to take a look around on his own. this instantly tells me a few things about him, none of them positive. it means that he 1) is lazy 2) doesn't really care about his "problem" 3) has had run-ins with admins on other servers that left him super mad, probably more than one 4) isn't a very agreeable or reasonable person all of those things are not things that are really fostered or taken kindly to on these forums. additionally, he then refuses advice and help without much of an explanation despite never having set any criteria for a server he'd like to find other than "no 12 year old admins". that isn't cool in any way, shape, or form and does not fly here. when people act this way, they get lampooned. the OP got lampooned. a lot. and you know what? he deserved every ounce of ridicule he got.
