holymage! Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 You're a lifesaver Byte. its what he does best i find. Definitely add more ram. Fallout needs atleast 8gig. And I'm not sure that motherboard will have a slot for a discrete graphics card. So it would be a good idea to plug the model into HP's website and see what it shipped with. As for built it yourself. It might actually be possible to meet the minimums with an A10-7870 and 16+gig of ram. Edit: Also, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.2552841 meets the minimums. 8 gigs of ram eh? well i only have 8 in my computer to start with so i guess i'll have to look into getting some more if i want to crank anything....hopefully i don't need to use ini tweeks or anything...
Neowulf Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 8 is both minimum and recommended, so the game probably won't see a boost from more ram. Full requirements are at the bottom of the steam page for it: http://store.steampowered.com/app/377160/ 4 cores 3.0ghz processor, 8gig ram, 30gig HD space (sorely tempted to free up space on my SSD for this), and a minimum 2gig graphics card GTX 550 TI or radeon HD 7870. Someone leaked some PC screenshots supposedly at max settings. Man I wish I could afford a monster machine.
TheBytemaster Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 (edited) Edit: Also, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.2552841 meets the minimums. That's a pretty good bundle. Does it come with a Wandows key? In any case, (because its a case and computers have... cases... nevermind), make sure to look around for the GPU, there's some pretty good deals floating around. (If you don't mind rebates.) Big rebate on this one, but here's another bundle, without a GPU. (Might want to swap out the motherboard though.) Happy hunting, Mata. Edited November 4, 2015 by TheBytemaster
Lethosos Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 I've done box rebuilds before. Had a motherboard fry, then a GFX card go poop. Best advice is to focus on motherboard, CPU, GFX card, and RAM. You can reuse everything else--the only thing you really need to pay attention to when working around your box are how many slots (both PCI and AGP) and the voltage of your power supply. Do not be afraid to go a little lower--I got a good deal from NewEgg by following that particular rule of thumb. I do suggest Corsair for RAM (DDR3 is what I peffer,) ASUS for mobo (Rock series is pretty steady,) Intel with hyperthreading and at least 2 cores for CPU, and ZOTEC for GFX card.
Neowulf Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Dual core won't run fallout. I personally pay more attention to number of reviews than specific brands. I've seen ASUS, biostar, and gigabyte motherboards all go through good and bad cycles. Ooo, rebranded OCZ 240gig SSD for $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820228119 SSD prices are getting down there. Unrelated: I Was Right! One of the spammers was advertising "childless solutions". Didn't bother finding out if it was black market adoption or black magic impregnation spells. And for my next prediction, 6 months from now we'll see offers to buy brainwashed slave nannies. Lethosos 1

Man I wish I could afford a monster machine. help me out with this, I'm trying to to understand this RAM thing: so if the min. requirements for F4 is 8GB and my tower has 8 (2x 4GB cards) can the game be run with that or do I need more? I've been asking this on Discord, but seeing as the chat there is like a bag of screaming kittens makes it hard to follow.
Neowulf Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Minimum and recommended for ram is 8gig, so 8 should be just fine. I'm guessing the game will actually take like 4-6gig when running.
Moderators Munaus Posted November 5, 2015 Moderators Posted November 5, 2015 it's weird that they would go out with 8, since Skyrim went with 2 min. and 4 rec. What magic have they pressed inside F4 exactly?
TheBytemaster Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 (edited) it's weird that they would go out with 8, since Skyrim went with 2 min. and 4 rec. What magic have they pressed inside F4 exactly? Bigger textures, higher render distance, more detailed geometry/tessellation, more/higher-bitrate sounds/music, more detailed engine, more entities/enemies at once, more sophisticated AI, etc. Just the natural software requirement creep-over-time, really. EDIT: Wow, I just got ninja'd. That has not happened in a long time. Edited November 5, 2015 by TheBytemaster

Milk Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 http://pcpartpicker.com/ is hands down the best site for designing your build. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/ Anandtech's benchmarks, while incomplete, are great to compare whichever GPUs/CPUs you'd like (that they've benched). http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Nzj6wP Here is a FO4 build I made for someone else, same $500 budget. You could change the video card to this reference R9 290, but the cooler has its spectularly terrible reputation for a good reason. It's hot, noisy and possibly ugly. The card is a good amount stronger than the 280x though. You could also remove the cooler and put a better one on, which is not too difficult from what I've heard. A couple other sites to check out are: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales A bunch of people posting cool sales. Check this out before you make a purchase. http://gpushack.com/ A recent startup from a redditor. He resells refurbished GPUs. I have not dealt with him but I've seen nothing but praise for his work. Don't take my word for it though. Finally, https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc is a nice place to post a build you're considering to have it looked over. _Mataroyale_Modpacker_ 1

Swap the R9 280 3G with an R9 380 4G, stick with XFX if you wish. It's a little cheaper, has an extra gig of ram, and will give better future performance. The 300 series has massive performance increases with directx12, so going forward it will be a better card. Budget lacks operating system, which you really need to get windows if you're using AMD. That's my one real gripe with them, horrid linux support. Also, build lacks an SSD. These days it's insanity to cripple a gaming system by running off a platter.

That's my one real gripe with them, horrid linux support. or pirate skillfully obtain a copy of windows. because i doubt anyone would want windows 10 or 8 (or 8.1) over something like 7. and can't you just move the hard drive over from one computer to the other? also my build lacks an SSD and is working perfectly fine without one. (its on my list of things to get, right below new keyboard and mouse.)
Milk Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 (edited) Why does this quote keep showing up in my reply box and how do I remove it I hadn't noticed the price drop on 380s. Thanks for the heads up. It does lack an OS. I hope Mataroyale can reuse the key from the old PC, else there would be some downgrades in order. Speaking of downgrades, at this budget I believe an SSD usually costs too much money that could be going to more important components. It depends on the situation but I would reserve them for $700+ builds. Edit: Whatthehell Edited November 8, 2015 by Milk
